Why hasn't Coppell just TAKEN the job?

When Micky went to Leicester, almost the first we heard of it was that he'd accepted the job. Why hasn't Coppell done the same?

1)He really wants to stay and is using it as a negotiating tool to get a better deal out of DK?
2) He's seeing how much the fans want him to stay?
3) He wants to make sure we're OK for Saturday before he goes?
4) He's waiting to see if Glenda accepts the job cos he's really second choice?
5) He really does need to think about it

None of these sound very plausible to me. What's the delay?

According to the BBC site Glenda hasn't even been interviewed for the job.

Brighton are the only club who have confirmed anything to the press.

According to today's Argus he's not overly impressed by the Reading package and as he likes it here, he's going to take the w/e to think it over.

A glimmer of hope maybe? Please don't abuse him on saturday, it just may make a difference.

I think he really isn't sure! Look how long it took him to decide to come to us in the summer. that was after both working for us already and having no other offers! - So he does take his time!!

Hurray

It saddens me that from being a hero Tuesday night everybody now has their knives out. He has been approached and has listened to what the other club has to offer. He hasn't jumped ship and is determined to get on with the job in hand.

Cheer him and he may decide to stay and see the job through. The decision from the public inquiry is only weeks away now

I so hope you're right. When something like this happens you go from gobsmacked, to sad, to angry, to grasping at straws!

I can't believe that he'll come on Saturday not having made a decision though. That would be madness.

If he doesn't think the reading package is that good, does that mean he is hoping for them to improve it?

I would be delighted if he stayed, but it would be nicer if he stayed for a postive reason ie that he preferred working for us, rather than 'well I would have gone, but the package wasn't good enough'.

I know its unrealistic to expect it, but it would be nice to have some clarity from the parties involved. Let's face it as supporters we have no idea we stand this weekend if SC turns up, do the players?

This whole thing has been a nightmare, and I think we, the players, supporters and staff, deserve a bit better, than being left dangling on a string of hope.

I sincerely hope he does stay and it worries me that people are already demonising because of his past. i thought we'd get over that (FG excepted). On the other habnd, if he is going to go I'd rather he went now. I will feel very let down if he goes after tomorrow. I saw his interview on Sky Sports News last night and he was noncommittal but he did say that the team had had a busy spell of matches culminating in tomorrow's game and that he wanted to stick it out. It was a bit ambiguous but there was a hint that he wanted to stay till tomorrow and then possibly leave. I think the crowd might have a part to play tomorrow.

What really annoys me that I am from an era when Reading were still a two-bit provincial side who had nowhere near the pulling power of brighton and I still regard them as a smalltime club which has struck lucky with a sugar daddy chairman and new stadium. If Steve can see the bigger picture and envisage life at Falmer then I think he can see that Brighton have much more potential than the Reading's of this world (assuming always that Falmer will happen). Aye, there's the rub...........

I don't think he's being demonised because of his past, it's because of his future.

I think he's a great manager, and he's done an excellent job for us, but that won't stop me being mightily disappointed and calling him a Palace reject with VD if he leaves!

Human nature...

Call me naive, but I think that we should take the Argus comment at face value. He is thinking it over.

I'm glad I'm going to be at Withdean tomorrow to cheer him on. It will either be his last game, or it will be the game where we may even help him decide to stay. A momentous occasion either way.

I very rarely swear but I am STILL so f***ing angry with Archer and Belotti for getting us into this mess.

Let's raise the imaginary roof with Stevie Coppell's Blue and White Army tomorrow, and show him that he would be mad to leave such a wonderful club!

To have not walked straight away is a credit to the club, when on the face of it it's a "no brainer" - new stadium / decent playing budget / realistic chance of getting into the premier against inside of a running track/ tiny playing budget / no proper office even and three years away from possibly having a chance to hold our own in the first division. Must prove that there's an X factor here.

To be honest, I was thinking of giving him a stony silence tomorrow for not either being honest with us or not committing himself to us. But having read this thread, maybe tomorrow will be important - and I will cheer him to the rafters, in the hope that it may affect his decision.

I think basically, we've offered him a performance-based package like the one Pardew had. Not a massive wage, but massive bonuses. If Coppell wants a bigger wage and smaller bonuses (likely for his own stability), then we'll offer it to him. If Madejski is looking for a cheaper option then we may not want the experience of Coppell that much after all. You'll notice that the Reading fans never even considered Coppell as we were after a young manager with little experience, but plenty of potential. Coppell is pretty well established compared to the traditional RFC way of bringing up managers and making them established. Still seems relatively different to me to see the way in which Madejski is trying to take the club now.

Very likely that he'll fear a backlash from the BHA fans on Saturday, so he'll stay away or sit in the stands. However, if he's in the dugout then it'd be the best idea to get behind him... I think.

Interesting listening to a couple of the Reading fans on Talksport this morning - didn't seem to fancy SC at all. Is that the general feeling Wilts?

Listen, in the summer SC was mulling over whether to stay at the club or not. When signing a contract he sited his decision was made easy because it was apparent how much the fans wanted him to stay. I think we should take his comments at face value that he is thinking over the Reading offer. No-one can begrudge him this - we would all do the same. As he has said, if Falmer was here, this wouldn't even be an issue. Many managers would have jumped ship already. It is PARAMOUNT that we get behind him tomorrow, everybody must sing 'Steve Coppell's Blue and White Army'. It would be a shame if we had a chance of keeping our manager but lost him cos some fans had their heads so far up their own arses and can't appreciate how much he's already done for this club, and he has already behaved better than 99% of individuals who would have already jumped ship.

As for the Reading offer, it is bound to be more attractive than what we can offer, but i firmly believe DK will do all in his power to keep SC here. However, Pardew was always talking about what tight wads Madjeski is, so there's always hope.

SC is an honourable man and already has a love of our club and fans. The ONLY thing we can do is get behind him tomorrow. Lets make sure this is the case. If he leaves, we'll give him hell on his return! :salute:
