What RDZ is eventually going to learn, as every great manager learns, is that the game of football is not going to change to make his footballing philosophy more successful. He is going to have to adapt his philosophy to the reality of the game of football.

A certain mr guardiola has been a clubs with way way more spending power than us ……
That doesn’t detract from the fact that he is bloody brilliant but it’s not something that should be ignored.

But he did so by becoming pragmatic about what was required to win. Guardiola has evolved and continues to evolve, as did SAF and other great managers before them. Never trust anyone willing to put their ideology first against the evidence of reality.

RDZ has superb footballing instincts, but I sometimes feel he’s wanting reality to adapt to his ideology, rather than the other way around.

Having watched the presser from today, you can literally pinpoint the moment when Roberto’s heart breaks … head shake… “I don’t know…” dead pan look… “transfers are not my business.” Full stop - death stare…

He’s gutted… it’s ceiling time, but in a way I perhaps didn’t envisage… he’s broken… as he wanted to create history here… not his personal history (see Gus and Potter) but his and ours together. . . He’s already delivered some history, but he clearly wanted more…

Football is all about timing and waiting to go all out in a cheaper market in the summer, after finishing about 11th, will probably see Roberto leave as he wants to compete in the minor European comps as a minimum.

If we’d been able to back him just a little more now, perhaps a different narrative could have played out…

Maybe I’m wrong … but unless Barco single handily plays in about three positions… we’ll do well to achieve any memorable history this season… and, lest we forget, winning one of the cups will be a MASSIVE ask, especially with a manager who has lost that fire 🔥 just a little.

Think you're summing up is about right. He wanted more help with 2 to 3 additions and knows he won't be able to improve on last seasons finish. Roberto, with a fully fit squad (which we haven't got and haven't had since October) would of challenged for top 4.

Well said, that’s exactly what I feel. Football is about the here and now as much as the future. We all want a sustainable club, of course we do, but it’s hard to believe we couldn’t have just tried a bit harder to grasp this moment where we have an elite manager and cup competitions in front of us.

If we lose to Palace tomorrow I can actually see the wheels coming off this season in a major way. There’s a real despondency coming from the manager, we just got battered by a team in the relegation zone, the majority of fans are perplexed by the transfer window and we are missing so many players. Tomorrow is a huge game.

True, but the systematic asset stripping of our midfield - irrespective of injuries, would’ve made a top 4 finish beyond dreamlike !

Mo not working out really is a blow, one I’m guessing we’d planned to offset… sadly we can’t always get our man/men … after all, we’re not a big club.

One season where we languish in mid table and do well in Europe (spoiler, we already have) before fully integrating the next wave of wonderkids and pushing on from there isn’t so bad. If Roberto decides that isn’t for him then I wish him well and look forward to his replacement

He did an absolutely incredible job getting us to the last 16 of the Europa league, Fa Cup 5th round and 8th in the league.
The demands on the squad were huge.

Those demands are not going to relent and we don't have the squad depth to capitalise.
He wants to win every game, but he's managing at a club that are more pragmatic and have lower expectations.

Something will have to give eventually.
I suspect it will not be a happy ending, but I trust in the club to line up a successor.

Until that moment, I hope we can all enjoy the ride.

Spot on.

The club not backing our best coach ever after making over 150 million in sales in the summer is mind boggling. Starting to doubt for the first time since Hyppia.

I keep waiting for someone to argue that RDZ has some responsibility - he's the coach after all - for winning a mere 3 games in 16.

(Of course he's had some dreadful luck with injuries, he's lost some key players in the summer - but surely that wouldn't have been a surprise, and he's kept us incredibly in the 2 cups - a massive achievement - and Thurs - Sun takes its toll ) .

But nonetheless he's not managed to find a win against Fulham, Luton, Sheff Utd, Palace, Burnley and Wolves.

Instead incredbily its Tony Bloom who appears to be the villain here for not "backing" him. Well yes. Agreed there's not been a replacement for March. which is perplexing although we do have options there. And with Dahoud going out , you might have expected someone coming in the other direction. So i imagine club didn't land what they wanted in the last 4 weeks or "went in a different direction" (De Zerbi). But surely RDZ must take some responsibility here ? He coaches the team after all . He can't use that as an excuse.

We've more than enough - even with the injuries - to beat Palace and pick up more wins this month - in which case i suspect a lot of this will be forgotten - as its inconsistent form - not the "chairman" thats i'm sure is the cause of his spiky demeanour at the mo. If not then ..watch out . Its going to get even bumpier.

Again - you’re not wrong… it’s a bit sad though, isn’t it? And wonderkids - for every Moises there’s a thousand Francis Jeffers.

And that’s not an encouraging thought.

lol. 😂

Ha Ha . Come off it . SOme perspective !!

Nonetheless . RDZ needs to get back out on the training pitch , sort his team out and let that do his talking for him. Fed up with the over analysis of his woes in press conferences. Can't the be the first time a chairman hasn't brought him what he wanted in a transfer window. Get over it.

You might well giggle but the style of coach I like - extrovert, passionate, unafraid to get in the ref's face and most of all ambitious - are never fully backed at this club. First Poyet, now De Zerbi.

Dull, functional, introverted yes men like Hyppia and Potter excite me about as much as celery.

Dear Chris was somewhere in the middle but very much needed. Garcia lazier than a 30 stone woman in a heatwave by all accounts.

To have your midfield dessimated and no replacements signed would affect even the best of teams. RDZ will go at the end of the season as he probably feels certain guarantees have been broken by those in charge. Mind you we now have enough u21s to field two teams

I’m sorry, but managing without multiple key players in your first team squad is like fighting with an arm tied behind your back. You’re aware of your deficiency, but there’s nothing you can do about it. If RDZ looks at the bench, he’s got either kids who need developing without being thrown to the wolves, which could set them back, or players returning from injury who need their minutes carefully managed.

I don’t know how many times it has to be spelt out, but losing Caicedo last summer was a surprise. It was envisaged that he’d stay another year before moving on. I’m not sure anyone here is painting Tony Bloom as the villain, but RDZ wants to play in a style that our current personnel doesn’t allow for. That’s a problem. He’s being forced to try ideas and compromises that aren’t always working out.

We can’t just go out and purchase a ready made Caicedo replacement, but it’s clear from what RDZ has said that he knows what he wants, and this was one of the two opportunities in each calendar year to plug gaps in the squad. I absolutely trust Tony’s judgement and believe that the club will have looked but not found the right deal. However, that doesn’t make RDZ a bad guy for communicating what he believes the squad needs, and being disappointed that we haven’t found it.
