No Lynch was left back but kept running forward more like a wing back.

I was listening to the comm in the chat room - no one could tell me who was playing left-back in the second half. Was it Frutie as a wing back ?

We reverted to 4-4-2 at about the 30/35min mark - Lynch went to LB, Fruity to left midfield, El Abd to RB, Hinsh right midfield. Second half, El Abd went to LB and did OK there I thought, Hinsh to RB, OGH right midfield.

Lynch was left back one minute then he'd pop up being the furthest brighton player the next. Couldn't work out where he was supposed to be at times.
I had the same problem! Lynch always seemed to be miles forward of where his opposite wing back Hinshelwood was standing! But maybe this is the first time Lynch has played wing-back, don't the youth teams stick religiously to a flat back 4 which is simpler for a player to judge his positioning? He certainly seemed more comfortable when changed to an orthodox left-back.

I think MM tried to push lynch up towards the front line when hendo was taking goal kicks so that he had something to aim at, worked a treat first half hour.

O and back to the point of the thread, butters did get done for pace a few times today but I think the formation made him more vulnerable to it than he usually is in a 442.

It was 0-0, one would suggest it was the forwards that where too slow today not the defence.

I think their forwards were a tad off the mark today - had enough chances to be 4 - 0 up at half-time but poor finishing.

I thought Butters did well. We were clearly playing a back three in the first half, El-Abd, McShane and Butters at CB with Hinsh at RWB and Lynch at LWB. Lynch pushed up more because it was easy for Fruity to drop into his space and I personally thought this worked well. When we pushed up more as a team we reverted to a back 4 with Butters at LB. Amazingly Butters did well, got tight to his man and closed down the angles. Sure he got a bit caught out in the first 5 mins as it was a new system but I felt they all coped very well with it. Lynch added a new dimension as he pushed up and I felt for the first time in a long time MM got his tactics spot on and we suprised Preston with some inventive and unpredictable play.

My only grumble is the centre of midfield. Carpenter was , anonymous except when he failed to deliver a pass which was everytime. Hammond spent most of his time trying to do the work of two men, except when he was displaying the touch of a rapist and the passing ability of a four year old girl. I actually felt sorry for Hammond, Carpenter creates so much work for him it is making him look a mug.

For me more than ever it emphasised that our problem is the centre midfield not upfront.

All in all the team played very well.

Good theory, sounds plausible enough.

As butters was on the left of the three at the back he was woefully exposed. If we were playing a three he should have been the player in the centre of the three.

On a number of occasions he has / nearly has cost us goals
because as soon as the left back is beaten he runs to the middle of the penalty area rather than out to the player with the ball. At this level he is a liability and should be dropped in favour of hinsh and mcshane at centre half. (shame many on here are too gutless to criticise him, just because last season he played well and his Mrs posts on here).

While I'm on the subject of players getting uncalled for praise on NSC, Henderson, whilst making some good saves yesterday (incidently all of which kuipers would have made) does not know when to come out and of his goalmouth and collect the ball. You could live with him just staying on his line (at least that would be consistent) but twice in the game yesterday he takes a couple of steps forward before changing his mind. There is nothing worse as a defender than an indecisive goalkeeper.

Right i'm off into hibernation for another year or so before posting. Maintaining a watching brief again.

Sorry but I must have missed FDM commanding his area? Not once in his career has he commanded his area and the back 4. I also do not think that he would have saved all 3 shots although I obviouslty do not have any proof of this. I know it is an opinion but IMHO you are very very wrong trying to campare FDM to Hendo. Hendo is quality and will get a lot better in time whereas FDM although he has been a good servant to the club was never as good as Roberts and will never be in the same league as Hendo.

So there:p
