I don't know if Brighton is disliked by much of the media but if it is presumably it's to do with the certain image it now has which is anathema to the reader/viewership of certain sections of the media.

They can dislike it if they want, I don't really care. It might not be perfect but it's better than the vast majority of similar sized towns and cities and on a good day it's the best. I came back for a month last summer and frankly it was glorious. Every day was beautiful, all day sunshine, temperatures in the 20's(and possibly the odd day in the 30's?), low to no humidity. Every day I rode my bike along the undercliff, through the marina into the centre of town. I'd then wander the lanes/north laine and eventually end up on the beach. I even enjoyed going on the pier...

It's a great town. Even in winter it has it's charms. The main roads through the centre are shitholes though. North street, western road, church street, west street, London road were a mix of desolate and depressing. They never were that great but the death of the high street has really affected them.

So, in summation, despite the lack of topless sunbathers and decrepit main roads Brighton still gets a big  from me. The haters in the media can do one.

How did they create this enclave ? What interests did they have there ?

I used to think Brighton was great, that’s faded over the years though as it seems less and less like Brighton as time goes on. Probably something to do with too many outsiders, which I used to think was a good thing, but now I think it kills the identity.

It’s strange, when in town you don’t see many locals, it’s mainly students or tourists who don’t seem to respect the place in general, like they are there because it’s something to do rather than something they want to do. I kind of prefer walking through town with no one about, like I did yesterday. Doesn’t look like there is much pride in the place or its history though and that’s a shame.

Nights out have too many dickheads about, so you can’t fully enjoy yourself. Girls seem nowhere near as friendly as they are in London, which seems bizarre, but that’s my experience, and goes for barmaids to girls going for a drink.

Doesn’t seem to have much drive in Brighton, like really wanting to get things done. It’s like a teenager with no soul.

Music scene seems to be almost gone. Not really any decent clubs for alternative types who like guitar music and not dance/rap shit. Not much variety really, bit like a one trick pony.

It’s probably really good if your 50+, have/had a career, have got a family, don’t have to rely on public transport and you don’t really have any ambitions anymore.

It’s quite good for what it is and is better than 90% of places, it could be so much better but for things and people dragging it down.

Just out of interest, what do 'locals' look like? I mean, if you saw me and my son-in-law walking down North Road, how would you know which of us was a local? Congratulations though for being one of the few 'it's all gone downhill' contributors not to have a reputation as a furious Brexiteer (although your references to outsiders... dragging it down might offer a clue. Who knows?).

Family obligations mean I often drive into Brighton from the north two or three times a day and it often occurs to me how much better this main road into town is than most you see. There are suburbs on either side through Patcham but they down't sprawl and the houses are nice. The urban A23 is pleasant and wooded all the way to Preston Park. You're right about West Street and North Street but the others you mention seem to be fighting back, and even London Road has a certain Portland Road charm if you're in the mood.

Yes.

Brighton is associated with, (and nationally renowned for) youth, tolerance, diversity, environmentalism and remain. This puts us on the front line and a target in chief for the billionaire press and their pathetic culture war.

I take pride in my city when the Daily Mail slates us.

I don’t agree there’s a dislike of Brighton per se but certain press owners, from The Mail to the Sun and even this very site, show an anti-left/pro-Tory agenda.

You're saying the Green Party mass purchased property in parts of Brighton and filled it with their supporters? :wozza:

This always makes me chuckle:

My trips to Brighton always follow exactly the same pattern:

Day 1: My god, this place is so vibrant! So alive! It feels like a party that never ends! Right, we’re moving here.

Day 2: Wow, Brighton sure does love being Brighton. Also, how much did I just pay for that pint, and why is everything so keen to broadcast how achingly cool it is? Maybe take the house off the market.

Day 3: JESUS CHRIST, I JUST WANT A STEAK BAKE AND SOMETHING NON-ARTISANAL TO DRINK. THAT’S IT – WE’RE LEAVING!

Well folk have to live somewhere. Hanover has been a diverse community for a long time now. Queens Park is reflective of most of the near city wards. Are you advocating some kind of political cleansing ?

I'm not sure that green themed outlets are an issue. They are in demand countrywide.

As for residency, My family have lived in Hanover/Queen's Park for at least 150 years. My great grandfather was the first park warden there.

A classically funny thread, it's descended into political scuffling.

You've got to love NSC.

NSC never use to be so heated and political. I sometimes wonder whether i am on a football forum or a Political site.

What has become of this site. Not how i remember it in the good old days...

Brighton is still a lovely town... IMO although i do feel it was better 20/30years ago but that might have been just because i was young and i was maximising all that was great about the place.

Definitely. Pre the Brexit/Remain referendum, NSC was a very different landscape. Last 4 or 5 years, 100,000’s of political posts from a highly polarised circa 50 or less characters, living, eating and breathing politics 24-7. It’s easy to also get drawn into it. Football comes secondary.

I go through phases of looking at other clubs fora, up and down the country, and I can’t think of one where dozens of highly political threads are at the fore.
