[Brighton] Why do the media hate Brighton town so much?

In my experience the most bitter anti Brighton types are over 50 born and bred in Brighton who look through rose tinted glasses at a ‘lost’ Brighton. We have many of those friends😀

I’m surprised to hear that. My group of over 50s friends were all born here and love it. Likewise many of our friends moved here for work or Uni years ago and stayed because they couldn’t think of anywhere they’d rather live.

You might want to consider changing your friends then

I am over 50. I was born and bred in Brighton. And I love the place.

The people, the buzz, the events, everything about it. Anything and everything from the excitement and noise of Pride and Kemptown Carnival to peaceful oases of beauty and tranquility like Jevs' wonderful rockery.

Of course there are ways it could be improved. Isn't that the case with anywhere?

But Brighton is my town. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Same here, born in the old Buckingham Road maternity hospital and lived in Old Steine until I was 9. Okay, it's not perfect and some good things have gone over the years, and the neglect of the West Pier, the Hippodrome and the Arches is shameful - but mostly everything is bigger and better. Including the Albion, of course. Squeezed between the sea and a national park is pretty much everything you could possibly want.

I’m surprised to hear that. My group of over 50s friends were all born here and love it. Likewise many of our friends moved here for work or Uni years ago and stayed because they couldn’t think of anywhere they’d rather live.

This to all of these. Brighton born and bred and love living here. Can't think of anywhere else in the UK I'd want to live.

Brighton has always been a satellite of London, ‘ London by the sea’ .It’s excellent commuter links have meant a lot of trendy luvvies have made it their home, like London it has become an echo chamber. The Greens have turned My Town into a shanty town, the place is a haven for scruffy, smelly students and FBPE loons, sneering down their noses at people that had the nerve to vote to leave the busted flush of the EU.

Not once, but twice I have witnessed drug dealing going on, when I took my 4 year old daughter last year.
Worst still it was going on by the tunnel that takes you to the aquarium. Wish I had said something to the Police at the time. Brighton has gone completely down hill.

The concept of "The Greens" ruining Brighton is ludicrous

yes mate, all of the issues in Brighton were caused by a Party who had a minuscule majority for about 4 years which was the first 4 years of austerity. ****ing idiot

It is laughable, isn't it?

I went and had a look on Wikipedia and found this:

I wonder if the same people decrying the small minority of the Green Party view Brighton from 2007 - 2011 as some sort of wonderland.

Politics aside I moved here from Worthing about 15 years ago when I just turned 20. It's a great city. I basically spent every weekend here from the time I was allowed out on my own so moving here when I could afford to was a no-brainer.

Yes and Devon and Cornwall. Lots of stories about people traveling to their beaches from all over the country. We had similar at Norfolk beaches. I guess though that you choose a story to read dependent upon your pre existing interest. I am more likely to read one about East Anglia than elsewhere just as Brighton residents are more pre-disposed to read stories/absorb photos about Brighton.

One common denominator was the disgusting piles of rubbish left behind everywhere.
What is wrong with people?

I hope your day wasn’t ruined. To have witnessed drug dealing twice cant be easy . Be brave though.

I used to think Brighton was great, that’s faded over the years though as it seems less and less like Brighton as time goes on. Probably something to do with too many outsiders, which I used to think was a good thing, but now I think it kills the identity.

It’s strange, when in town you don’t see many locals, it’s mainly students or tourists who don’t seem to respect the place in general, like they are there because it’s something to do rather than something they want to do. I kind of prefer walking through town with no one about, like I did yesterday. Doesn’t look like there is much pride in the place or its history though and that’s a shame.

Nights out have too many dickheads about, so you can’t fully enjoy yourself. Girls seem nowhere near as friendly as they are in London, which seems bizarre, but that’s my experience, and goes for barmaids to girls going for a drink.

Doesn’t seem to have much drive in Brighton, like really wanting to get things done. It’s like a teenager with no soul.

Music scene seems to be almost gone. Not really any decent clubs for alternative types who like guitar music and not dance/rap shit. Not much variety really, bit like a one trick pony.

It’s probably really good if your 50+, have/had a career, have got a family, don’t have to rely on public transport and you don’t really have any ambitions anymore.

It’s quite good for what it is and is better than 90% of places, it could be so much better but for things and people dragging it down.

You've spent literally all week at a high intensity training course on irony, haven't you?

As for the unbolded bits they are all complete bollocks.

Which clubs play British rock in Brighton? As far as I’m aware, If I want to go to a rocky club night, I have to go listen to American screamo shit and I’ve done that enough to know I don’t really like it. 80’s night at The Green Door Store is good, but I don’t think there’s much else these days.

Most people will agree that Brighton’s gone a bit downhill, so what else can you blame other than the people or the ones in charge?

I was born in Brighton, grew up in Brighton and lived there for 33 years and also spent many years working in Brighton, Hove and surrounding areas.
I hardly go to Brighton now, and I can't say I miss it, I go to home games but I've never thought of Falmer as Brighton.
I'm definitely not a bitter anti Brighton type as someone has mentioned, I do like Brighton and I'm proud to be a proper Brightonian ( not some DFL that's lived there for a year and calls themselves a Brightonian )
I definitely wouldn't want to live there again, property is far too expensive and I think there are too many buy to let student houses that have ruined some areas of the town.

And I like living in Newhaven :) I am settled here now.

I’ve definitely been to a rock ballad night at the Komedia in recent years.

Well since you've mentioned 80s music here and Oasis (a 25 year old band who were themselves a pastiche of a 60s band) on a previous thread, your needs are somewhat "niche". I would suggest you head for a pub full of over 45s drinking bitter and wearing Pretty Green. There are a few around. But clubs looking to attract under 30s who want to dance and cop off with each other? Yeah, you're probably right.

That doesn't mean Brighton is a cultural desert when it comes to rock and guitars though. The Great Escape festival every May (unless Covid's around) and the various after parties are a cornucopia of new music, rock and guitars very much included. Gigs and live music in the City cover every single base including what you're after. You're just not looking hard enough.

Apart from a period of four years (2011-15), where they depended on other parties to get any legislation through, the Greens have not been in control of the chamber.

Tell me, how have they ruined the place ?

Created an enclave for their own interests ,Hanover , Queens Park to name a couple of places ,Generally a bunch of people living a fantasy world, scruffy untidy people in general
