It's bizzare that anyone would think a single player - in particular a CB - could turn a team when they all played poorly. Only two that came out with any credit were March and Cucurella - and even then they weren't great but at least they seemed up for it.

No one is talking about him playing at LB, your memory is even shorter.

Burn played left side CB in a back 3 against Wolves and Arsenal in the 20/21 season. Both games where he was particularly inept and people were calling him out. You may recall Potter jumping to his defence saying people who were on his back knew nothing about football.

You're suggesting relegation threatened Burnley who couldn't buy a win let alone score a goal would have exposed Dan Burn as Traore did, the same Traore who is now at Barcelona? Burnley offered nothing like the same threat yesterday as Traore did in that game, don't kid yourself.

We would have been far better equipped yesterday with 3 CBs and it would have been nice to have Dan Burn available. This is not a contentious point, we were unlucky not to have Webster fit but never looked comfortable at the back.

Why did we sell Burn? It was a calculated gamble thats for sure.
29 years old and 6 months left on his contract.(30 before his contract would have expired) What kind of contract would they have offered him in the summer? Weve a lot of young CBs chomping at the bit out on loan and in the squad so actually being able to sell him was decent.
It was a small gamble that hasnt quite paid off as youd probably bet against Webster and Dunk both being unavailable but we also have Duffy, Veltman, Roberts etc for backup.
He was in a purple patch but would he have made that much of a difference yesterday? They had a giant in attack but he scored with his feet.

Burnley offered a lot more of a threat than us !! How many saves did their Keeper have to make ?

Burn had 18 months left. But I do agree either Duffy or Burn needed to go at some point and we got a great deal for Burn.

The only slightly puzzling thing for me is Roberts - would he not have been a better option? Unless they want him playing with a ‘leader’ and lack of Dunk & Webster a problem

Webster has always had a ‘niggly’ injury record so that is a bit of a concern for the rest of the season

All in all - with £67M losses of Bloom wants to offset some of that with a player sale who can blame him ?

Burn left and we’ve lost three out of four, coincidence not a chance he was as safe as houses in the CB role. Never took any risks never really flapped good player we’ve lost for peanuts.

Veltman has also been 'safe as houses' but was all over the place yesterday. How can you say with any certainty that Burn wouldn't have been as bad as the rest against Burnley?

Burn was also responsible for the West Ham goal yesterday - didn’t hold his line , dropped deep and played Dawson onside so hardly faultless

I understand this post after yesterday’s performance, but am not ready to panic just yet. Other posts have already given the various reasons for the sale. If we play like yesterday at the back throughout our remaining games, then selling Burn will (in hindsight) seem like a really silly decision.

Hindsight is always 20/20 though, and I will continue to believe that the club felt they were doing the right thing for Dan and the club at the time, on the information they had. We have Clarke and Roberts who can be made available in an emergency, and we can’t predict suspensions or injuries.

Of course they did, we were poor all over the pitch but the wretched defensive performance could have been addressed had we had suitable cover at CB. The poster suggesting Dan Burn having a rotten game against Wolves years ago would make him any less likely to improve us yesterday, he would have.

Don't like Veltman on the left either, he didn't look comfortable.

Bissouma and Lallana also not beyond reproach here either they were both off the boil and let the game pass them by.

He wants long term top 10, not a one off. I can only assume that while they knew we would be stronger for the rest of this season with him, longer term they reckoned he was unlikely to be a consistent starter and the money and his desire to go was enough to get the move through.

So maybe we suffer one bad result without both Dunk and Webster, and maybe we wouldn't have lost with Burn. In the great scheme of things does it really matter? Our trajectory doesn't change. Next season we'll have some or all of van Hecke and Clarke and Roberts and Tsoungui and Offiah and Ostigard and Turns pushing to come through. That's the development of us into a long term top 10 side that the moving on of Dan Burn may benefit us in the final analysis.

Very much THIS.

See also : 'Why don't we buy a proven Premier league striker' and 'Why do we keep buying players into the development squad never to be seen again' ???

And do you really think Burn would have made a difference surrounded by Big Bob, Veltman, Cuc, Biss, Shane, etc etc all having absolute stinkers

when we sold Burn it was first time he had had a run of games at centre half for us

we sold him at a time when his value had peaked

and he clearly wanted to be back home on probably double the wages

not as if we have not got plenty of other centre halves, all be it loads of them are out on loan

Not the point I’m making at all but happy for you to use it to suit your agenda. He was also awful against Arsenal last year and was the cause of their only goal when Saka turned him easily. There’s no doubt Burn was going through a great purple patch prior to us selling him and is a miss at the movement. He’s been a solid player for us and it’s a shame he’s gone but I’m not wetting the bed like some. Some are blathering like we’ve sold Maldini in his prime for peanuts. £13m for a CB who is 30 in May and would have a year on his contract at the end of this season was good business. He’d have had no resale value if he’d stayed.

I would hope it gives the likes of Roberts a chance to establish themselves over the rest of the season. Was correct not to throw him in today though, Burnley are hard ******** who would have bullied him, especially with no Dunk or Webster.

People have got awfully short memories. Lost count of the number of times BDB got flamed for less than stellar performances over the last season or two.

He’s going through a bit of a purple patch currently but has never been an automatic choice for us.

The idea of his saving us from an all round abysmal performance yesterday is laughable. Burnley were better than us from the off in every position…….

He got flamed a lot but other than 3-4 bad games over the Potter seasons, he was great.

Difference between finishing 9th and 11th in the EPL is about £13m (well it was last season). Just saying.

No it’s not. The difference in prize money between each position is about £2 million, so it would only be about £4 million based on final league placing. Any other difference between the money won by 9th over 11th would have been down to the number of times the teams were on TV over the season. Seeing as Leeds finished 9th last season and the media wanted to play out the mighty Leeds and Bielsa being back in the PL narrative that explains the difference. Leeds actually got more for finishing 9th than Arsenal did for finishing 8th. Everton in 10th got more than either Leeds or Arsenal.

No it’s not.

Prize money (merit share) is about £2M between each place.

The only other variable is the domestic facilities fee, which is based on the number of time’s you’ve been screened live and is around £1m per game or £10m in total if you’ve not been featured live more than 10 times.

Roberts is being held back for a reason. Whilst he might improve with better players around him his performances for the U23s and when out on loan were ok but not IMO good enough to play PL. Hopefully his time will come.
