Quite.

48 hours after the snow, you'd expect some kind of high-visibility presence of gritters and the like. Not seen a single one. And never seen the pavements wall to wall ice sheets like today. When the entire population of a town the size of Brighton has to walk in the road, then the council has f***ed up royally. Complete dereliction of duty. C unts.

Dont they get paid extra for being called out at the weekend if it is their scheduled day off ? Sounds like the council trying to save on the overtime.

And passing massive bills on to the NHS and the emergency services as a result

Dont worry about the bill for the emergency services as that is a precept to the council tax.

It was never as bad as this when East Sussex County Council was responsible for the roads in Brighton. I am amazed at the fact that there is still ice all over the road and pavement outside the entrance to the Church Street car park.

I hope you controlled the laughter. :lolol:

I saw a large lady fall over about an hour ago in my road and burst out laughing..........She turned and saw me. I cant help but laugh at people falling over, older people seem to do it in slow motion:clap2:

Seven Dials
Seven Dials. Absolute discrace. Buckingham Road, Albert Road, Alexandra Villas are all im passable. There have been no gritters here at all and the roads are dangerous.

The elderly here are stranded. B&HCC are a joke, the money they make from the parking in the city, one day of snow and they cannot deal. As for the parking attendants, where are they, at home with their feet up!!! Get your green uniforms on, collect a bag of salt and help rather than do nothing..

Rant over...

Too true. Compton Ave is like an ice rink. The pavements around here are lethal.

I saw an elderly lady slip over in my road yesterday. Foolishly, I went over, helped her up, picked up her handbag and grocceries, checked her wrist wasn't broken, asked her were she lived and then walked her home.

I now realise that I should have been a complete **** like you.

Why haven't the grit bins been replenished?

They sit full of grit for 364 days of the year - on the day that you need them, they've (understandibly) been emptied yet B&HCC can't even forsee this eventuality happening and put some resources into re-filling them.

With the freeze / thaw expected for a few days yet, the ice could remain for a while.

Will they bother to fill them up? I'm happy to spread a few bucketfulls along with many of my neighbours, will our council help us to help ourselves I wonder?

How do they fill up the bins? It would need a huge heavy lorry to fill up all the bins and the roads are too bad for that! Grit isnt at an endless supply and its more important to keep the main roads clear at the very least and that will be where the grit will be used!

Why are you such an apologist for these incompetents? Do you work for them? Belong to one of their parties? Sleep with one of them?

Funnily enough I do work for the council but I have nothing to do with the road gritting people, nor do I acctually give a shit about them.

What annoys me is that people just assume everything will be sorted and that the icy conditions dont affect the council.

How many people on here have said that their roads are un-drivable or the roads cant handle busses?

Where do you think the gritter drivers live? In some special underground bunker that isnt affected by weather? Why dont you think the busses can get on some of their routes? Incase no-one has ever seen the gritters the grit comes out the BACK of them and doesnt melt the ice instantly. What do the gritters drive on then? Is it not the same roads as the busses?

If half the people on here put half as much effort into gettng out and about and clearing some of their roads as they do moaning then we wouldnt be having such a big problem!!!

It is SAFE to go outside, you just have to be sensible! I have done EXACTLY the same things in the last 3 days as I would have done anyway apart from not playing Football. Ive got to work, Ive been out with friends, Ive been shopping, Ive driven to Haywards Heath and back. All you have to do is be SENSIBLE and not stupid, take the right precautions etc...

I'm sure its not beyond the realms of possibility to get some sort of delivery even if its near the bins not actually in them.

There are plenty of commercial vehilcles still managing to get about despite doing so with great difficulty.

Funnily enough, the grit thrown onto the roads eventually gets washed down the drains and then sucked up by the contractors employed to empty the gullies & soakaways. The contractors then recycle the useable content (such as the grit) from the other muck into aggregates that they then sell on or use in their other operations. So, not only is there plenty of it, its paid for by the tax payer, who pays to have it spread, then pays again to have it sucked up from which the commercial operator makes a few quid on them.

To be fair though, there was about a week's warning of when the snow would hit. Even to the exact HOUR i.e. 9pm Thursday night. And the council and therefore the gritters know exactly what the bus routes are. Even to the exact ROADS. Shouldn't have been as bad a problem as its become IMHO.

It was front page of the Argus on Tuesday.

Fair enough but the gritters are supposed to grit prior to the snow. Once gritted, those roads remain free and allow for re-gritiing thus keeping them open.

I understand that sometimes, rain precedes the snow and washes the grit away that has been laid down but that wasn't the case this time.

Mind you, its not the drivers who get it wrong - they are only directed by a management structure that is supposed to time all this to grit at the correct time.

If it was so EXACT why havent all the people stuck in their houses taken precautions?

I never heard any reports suggesting the exact time and day it was going to snow, all I heard was that there was a "Chance of snow" over the next few days!

Sorry, but there WERE predictions. And they quoted 9PM Thursday. Which is when the snow started.

And people stuck in their houses - or flats - can't be expected to grit the lethal ice-laden pavements throughout their entire neighbourhood. That's what they pay an exorbitant council tax for.
