Yes! We all new it was coming a week before. You explain to a pensioner that it's tough luck she has a broken leg.

You've just got to be sensible havent you, Ive seen loads of OAP's out and about and none of them have fallen over! And gritting the roads has NOTHING to do with someone falling over while they are walking on the pavement has it?

not sure if you are being serious or not? cant really compare last Feburay's 10-12" of snow to this weeks 3-4" which we get most years.

i would venture the suggestion they arent gritting because its the weekend and cant afford the overtime.

I dont know about you but for me it was nearer 6-7" this time, and to be honest its the same principle no matter how deep the snow is.

They are gritting at the weekend, I saw 3 yesterday on the drive home from work (Hove-Southwick).

The reason they havent gritted the smaller roads yet is because they grit the main roads and then cars use them all day and the grit gets kisked off the road and it freezes again over night and then they have to start again!

I don't expect B&HCC to grit everywhere - that would be unreasonable.

Most people in my street have been out and cleared 'their' patch. However, given this that most people will actually get off their backsides and do something if it important to them - why aren't the grit bins full? The three nearest to me are all empty. I was going to spread a couple of bucketfulls on the iciest corner near me but I can't.

It does not seem unreasonable to expect B&HCC to at least provide the materials for people to do 'their bit'. When temperatures are like this, and many side roads (and pavements) are covered in a sheet of ice, then those bins should be filled up on a daily basis.

If the City want to put all their public transport eggs in one bus-shaped basket, then there needs to be better provision for keeping them running if & when we get a small amount of snow.

thats true where people clear their own bit of sidewalk. bit like thing used to be here. maybe if we got of are areses and did more for ourselves, we'd be in a better state generally.

I am sure that the reason a lot of people dont clear their pathway is because it has been widely stated that if somebody falls as a result of you clearing snow or ice you are liable, if you havent touched it you are not, it is an act of god.

How do you mean "main bus routes" The 49 and 49a run from the avenue to portslade. They don't go into moulsecoomb or bevendean as they usually do.

Bevendean and Moulsecoomb aren't really major routes though, are they? The major route part of the 49 bus route has been gritted.

Same with the 25. And the 7.

There are probably thousands of people in bevendean and moulsecoomb who can say they live on a main bus route. But should those parts be gritted as a priority?

There are thousands of people in lower bev & 'scoomb and it'll be a bloody long, icy & dangerous walk to get down to lewes road to get a bus to work tomorrow.

The 5 and 5a are only going as far as the grenadier and not venturing into Hangleton which is annoying. Luckily the pavements are still covered in snow here rather than ice so I should be able to get to and from the grenadier tomorrow.

i reckon this is a myth, since the councils themselves dont do a particularly thorough job when gritting any way. they just launch shovel loads of salt across the pavement with large areas missed and dont bother to pay attention to spot like bus shleters or crossings where you know people will stand/walk.

Around Port Hall it is an ice rink. I have fallen twice. An old lady fell this morning and broke her hip. People have been out all day with salt, hammers and shovels trying to clear a path and opening themselves up to being sued. The balanced view would have to describe the council as completely useless wankers. However infrequently this happens it is still their responsibility. Tossers.

Quite.

48 hours after the snow, you'd expect some kind of high-visibility presence of gritters and the like. Not seen a single one. And never seen the pavements wall to wall ice sheets like today. When the entire population of a town the size of Brighton has to walk in the road, then the council has f***ed up royally. Complete dereliction of duty. C unts.

A couple of my mates live near the road which goes down from the Dials to the Duke of Yorks. It was so icy on one sreet they had to pull themselves up the pavement by using the railings at the front of people's gardens.

I also saw a fairly large pool of very fresh red blood on some ice yesterday lunch time. Against the white snow and ice it looked a horrific sight.

The streets and roads have never been this bad before.

How can you be sued if you clear the snow and ice ? If someone falls over on the pavement outside your property after you have gone to the effort to clear it then its their own fault and not yours.
