You quoted his signing as the reason Villa are where they are in the league in comparison to us.

On that point you are wrong.
On the inferred point he is a better option than what we have already, you are also wrong.

That is all

This is junk. I said none of that. You need to fix your inference engine too

You were talking about what goes on / not goes on at Lancing, how often do you go?

I never said I watched training. I repeat. I see what I see in games...

The club are addressing the situation for when we get back to supporting the club. They are supplying full head wear protection for all supporters sitting behind the goal that we are attacking.

I think Mark Farrington cost a few bob at the time we signed him. Maupay isn't a lost cause just yet, he has to work on improving his finishing but if it doesn't work then yes we have to look around.

Apologies.
I got side-tracked by the Watkins comparison.

The thrust of your argument was if we spent big/well like Villa we could be where they are now.
And that Callum Wilson is the signing that will save Newcastle from relegation.

Ha! We’ve made PLENTY of mistakes. Look at Locadia. Andone hasn’t worked out well. Ali J was a mistake. However, I’m a realist and a supporter of the club, the board and the manager rather than a stamp my feet dullard with a ‘club can do nothing right’ agenda.

Four seasons and counting in the top flight, an unbelievable crop of young players, terrific infrastructure and a highly rated young manager. There are things to address but anyone would have taken where we are now ten years ago, three and a half years ago even two seasons ago.

Why not enjoy it rather constantly whine. Surely it will never get much better than this? It hasn’t been close in my 30+ years supporting the club.

You on the other hand seem like the kind of bloke who could end up in bed with Cindy Crawford but moan because she has size ten feet.

I've got her on ignore. I couldn;t stand the relentless negativity.

The finishing in the Man U v Liverpool FA Cup game shows you what the top of the league teams can afford.

But you're not just talking £50m plus for these players, you're also having to pay them £150-250k a week. These feel like unsurmountable barriers to a club like Brighton. Expecting our players to deliver like these is ridiculous. Expecting us to afford them (NB it's not just about the fee, it's always about the wages) equally so.

The biggest question for me isn’t the chequebook, it’s are we playing a style that suits the strikers we have. Welbeck and Connolly both want the ball into space behind the defence. I guess that’s why we’re better away, punishing teams like Leeds, Newcastle and Villa who take the game to us. It’s much harder at home where most teams seem to sit deep and attack us on the break unless we score the first goal, but we’ve too often conceded when that’s happened.

I really don’t know what the solution is. A bigger target man in the Murray/Ulloa mould would be an excellent plan B but they’re just so hard to find. Would be bloody great if we could get one at the right price.

Now I realise that you can do anything with statistics, but I thought it was interesting to see the average minutes some* of Neal Maupay's contemporaries were taking to score a goal this season.

Mins Played/Player/Goals Scored/Ave Min Per Goal

1222 Maupay 7 - 174 mins per goal scored
1431 Zaha 8 - 178
1510 Wilson 8 - 188
1530 Watkins 7 - 218
1540 Rashford 7 - 220
1512 Mane 6 -252
1474 Bowen 5 - 294
1516 Aubameyang 5 - 303
1397 Werner 4 - 349
1535 Wood 3 - 511

*Kane/Salah/Vardy/Calvert-Lewin/Bamford have a better scoring rate than Maupay.
But if I had included them my list wouldn't look so good. (if politicians can do it, so can I)

I don't think anyone does expect that, but equally we wouldn't mind an improvement on Richard Tiltman, Mark Farrington and Kevin Bremner, which currently we have, but only just.

Do all of them play with as creative a midfield as ours and do they all take the penalties? 4 goals in half a season in open play is criminal with our midfield. Thats just how it is.

Yep. Look at the clubs in the bottom half. There’s only two or three strikers I’d really want - a fit Jiminez, Callum Wilson and maybe Chris Wood.

Not all, but Werner, Rashford and Watkins certainly do and two of them cost far more than our strikers.

On the subject of practice, Lineker, Shearer and Wright used to practice shooting/finishing every day in training without a goalkeeper to increase confidence. They weren't too shabby. I wonder if our lot do that?

Because players are not coached very well in being clinical ? No killer instinct ?

I don't believe the players aren't capable. We've seen on several occasions that they are. I do think some of them have hit a ceiling though. If we want to move up a rung on the PL ladder we need to keep evolving the squad, obviously.

I can't believe Premier League players need to be coached how to shoot. Shooting is just as much about mentality and belief as it is skill. Personally I think they're lacking a bit of belief and confidence in shooting.
