[Albion] Why Are We So Wasteful?

I thought Connolly looked fantastic in the 1st half of the Wolves game. Really intelligent runs, a superb poached finish and an overhead kick that was executed to almost perfection but was just too close the keeper. If he can go on a scoring run and get some confidence, he is certainly a 15+ EPL goals per season man based on the number of chances that we could provide him. I’m hoping he is ready for Fulham.

I think he might be

Sorry if this opinion has been posted elsewhere.
Listening to Potter being interviewed and asked about the Biss goal, he did not seem very happy about it, he said it was a good goal but he intimated that he keeps shooting from distance but with no result but this time "you can't argue with him".
That is what I got from it anyway.
I think he would have been much happier that on getting the ball, 3 lay off passes and a tap in to an empty net and he would have been far happier.
Does this remind anyone of another manager?
The playing out from the back, multiple passing holding possesion, passing around the box and a pass into the net.
Also corners and free kicks being of treated as getting in the way of the game plan.
It reminds me so much of Arsenal under Wenger.
Trouble is, if you want to play that way you have to have the players to be able to do it otherwise PL players and managers will eat you up.

I felt Potter’s comments on Biss shooting were extremely worrying. The way I see it, Biss messed up two long-range shots, then scored a worldy. Biss should be applauded for shooting. Shame his team mates would rather pass until we lose it...

Toney is a great example of us not going for it when we probably should have. You can bet Brentford will AT LEAST double the money they spent on him.

Clever non-investment by us? I think not.

So how come no other Premier League club went for him? There is absolutely no guarantee he would make it in the prem but like I said, imagine the stick the recruitment team would be getting if we signed a League 1 player.

I don't get that with Bissouma, so what ,he missed a couple but then scores, most of our other promising build ups end up with dithering about and not even a shot at goal.

Another ‘club can do no wrong, unable to think clearly’ poster

Ha! We’ve made PLENTY of mistakes. Look at Locadia. Andone hasn’t worked out well. Ali J was a mistake. However, I’m a realist and a supporter of the club, the board and the manager rather than a stamp my feet dullard with a ‘club can do nothing right’ agenda.

Four seasons and counting in the top flight, an unbelievable crop of young players, terrific infrastructure and a highly rated young manager. There are things to address but anyone would have taken where we are now ten years ago, three and a half years ago even two seasons ago.

Why not enjoy it rather constantly whine. Surely it will never get much better than this? It hasn’t been close in my 30+ years supporting the club.

You on the other hand seem like the kind of bloke who could end up in bed with Cindy Crawford but moan because she has size ten feet.

We signed a second division Swiss player instead. Which club took the bigger risk? I certainly would NOT have criticised if we had splashed £10m on Toney

I want Tony to stay.

I am not going to shut up. This is a message board. I am as entitled to my opinion as you are.

I have explained why I think Tony should invest more. But you seem unable to make a coherent argument against mine. Rather you just got abusive.

He’s in for over £200m so far. Hasn’t cashed in when clubs come calling. How much more would satisfy you? £100m? £200m?

For the U23’s. Zeqiri is only playing because of injuries. Do you seriously think Toney would have made a difference jumping two divisions? Let’s face it, you’d be proper negative if he’s had signed for £10m and not scored five or six by now.

Not far off; 9 for Watkins I believe. Can you imagine if we had Wilson AND Maupay, and Newcastle had neither? How many points do you think we would have then? How many would Newcastle have?

I stand by my argument

Cool

You're wrong.

Checked the Premier league Stats
Ollie Watkins Prem Goals 7 from 1504 minutes played
Neal Maupay Prem Goals 7 from 1224 minutes played

I didn’t notice her feet! [emoji6]

Actually I agree we are doing far far better than our norm. However, there IS a ****ing obvious problem, which is the subject of this thread.

I am NOT saying we need to spend £40 million on a target man. But I am saying Maupay is doing well, not brilliantly, Welbs is too injured, Connolly is young and understandably inconsistent, and Zeq needs more time.

By my reckoning that means we must invest in a decent target man or run a high risk of relegation.

Alternatively try the striker coach option.

Also our manager should be encouraging MORE shots, NOT LESS.

My mantra from before the season started still stands:
Top 10 defence (great recruitment here)
Top 10 midfield (great recruitment here)
Bottom 3 strike force (recruitment fail)

Whatever a decent target man costs. Sell White, Biss or Tariq if we have to.

Well we did allegedly have a £27m(?) bid accepted for Nunez in September. The will is there but you can hardly criticise Tony for holding out for the right one. I imagine Welbeck is a stop gap until a the right player is acquired.

I really hope I am wrong, but... Welbs track record with injuries suggests we may have wasted more money on the stop-gap striker solution

2 EFL cup goals apparently

I thought I heard it was his 8th of the season. but apparently not.
7 the same as Maupay.

Well he had scored 9 as I said then. Bit strong to say I am wrong.

As sad as it is, shooting from distance is on the verge of extinction. Its not just Potter/Wenger but all modern managers dont want shots from the distance. Why? Simple: a lot of todays tactics are data driven and data shows that shooting from range is extremely inefficent while passing the ball into certain zones is extremely efficient. Thats why Pep yelled "dont shoot!" to Kompany before he scored that PL winning goal.

Once in a while it works and you forget about the 30 failed long shots before where the player just gave away the ball instead of playing it to a teammate in a better position to score.

You quoted his signing as the reason Villa are where they are in the league in comparison to us.

On that point you are wrong.
On the inferred point he is a better option than what we have already, you are also wrong.

That is all
