As a nation we seem more concerned about the cost of immigration to the state, or MPs claiming for house plants.

Yet we have billionaire, Prince Charles, being paid for by the state in ever increasing sums. The state picked up the bill for his travel, a 48% increase on the previous year. His "tax bill" (in quotes, because it's all voluntary) fell by 10%.

As you'll see, the BBC does it's best to justify the £3m direct cost to the state, but it does seem absurd to me. I'll never understand why so many people simply won't consider an alternative to the Royal family.

As "the people" we don't have any choice about the fact there is a Royal Family, unless someone organises a revolution. QEII is the head of state, Charles is her successor, we should all bow down to them and bask in their reflected glory.

But if it wasn't for us spunking Millions on the Royals we'd be wasting it on things like Submarines and Hospitals.

I'd much rather have a nice Queen and some Princes,Princesses,Earls,Dukes and that than a smelly old A&E department or some new bombs.

I'm not arguing - most people don't care or mind. And it doesn't seem to bother such people that state coffers are missing tens of millions in unpaid tax from the Royal family either (because they never had to pay it).

Funnily though, many of those same people become outraged over state hand outs amounting to a few quid a week, or a few immigrants being awarded council houses.

i think the royal family are the glue that hold this great country of ours together, you wont find better servants to the nation than the queen and prince philip, both of whom served in ww2 , it was a sad day for the nation when the queen mother died, she embodied all that was great about this country, and to be honest i think we would see tourism to london pretty much dry up if we lost the royal family , god bless em.

So if we got rid of the royal family would people stop visiting us? I don't think so; it doesn't stop them going to Egypt or Rome even though there are no Pharoes or emporers any more. And they still go to the Palace of Versailles in France; indeed you could argue that Versailles gets more tourists because it ISN'T a royal palace any more - a bit like Hampton Court or the Tower of London.

Most sources of data are disputable and open to interpretation, I don't post this as proof, just as information. This also adds to the debate that the "crown lands" bring in money. Which is more than those that sponge off the state (which occurs wioth 'native brits' just as it does with some immigrants). So it isn't just tourism dollars that the royal family bring in (however negligible the difference would be if they went).

Even as a republican, I can take your point regarding the queen, and by extension, her rude husband. However, don't believe everything they tell you about the queen mum - she wasn't the Berol Reid deary that Spitting Image portrayed. Many people who worked for her have suggested she was a grabby, selfish and spiteful woman who was completely out of touch with the common man.

Phil, if the Americans pulled down the statue of liberty, would you consider the US of A of your holiday agenda?

mate, it was a wind up , i am a bit of a republican myself to be honest , and as for the queen mum, my dad lived next door to one of the cleaners at buckingham palace as a kid, the queen mother was a nasty old cow according to her, and i always wondered where she got all that yellow paint for her teeth.
