1970 was my first real interest and that save by Gordon Banks from Pele's header impressed.
Earliest Albion fave was Brian Powney - I think he lived along the road from me in Saltdean?

Steve Heighway I got slightly obsessed about in Match and Shoot comics as a player for no reason except a crystal clear memory of him being the first player I ever got a sticker of for my (probably) Panini album. Bryan Robson is the first player I remember watching on TV and keeping an eye out for.

Dalglish and Clemence. By the mid 80s it was Penny and Perry!

As a near octiginerian my first heroes were from long ago:
John Charles possibly the greatest British footballer
and for Albion: a toss up between Des Tennant and Eric Gill

Definitely Brian Powney for me but the Albion didn't seem to 'count' when I was at school so my first non Albion fave was Jeff Astle, which was handy as he also played for an Albion in blue and white stripes. I thought he was unfairly hung out to dry for not scoring against Brazil 1970 through a totally packed area as well.
