Kevin Keegan, my first game was Brighton v Southampton Jan 84. Never stopped me supporting Brighton, my first Brighton fave was probably Michael Robinson
.

I'm trying to work your fog of memory error out here. Southampton weren't in our league in 83/84 and the nearest January home match against them was in 1978.

Ward scored loads, and got us to where we were - but, I don't know. Gerry Ryan was much more of a favourite for me, seemed more human and fallible somehow!

He may have been thinking about 27th December 1982 which although isnt January or 1984 its only a year and a few days out.... although it couldnt have been then either as Keegan joined Newcastle from Southampton in 1982.

First favourite ? Alan Duffy. A crowd pleasing striker with character and haircut that impressed me at the time.
He was a short lived hero who soon went to seed , but it was good while it lasted.

I remember his scoring 2 goals in a midweek evening game (or dark winter ) as we came back to either 2-2 or win 3-2. No idea of the opposition . Charismatic on occasion.

George Best, who was usurped by Johann Cruyff. Best was an outrageously good solo performer, but I'd grown up enough by 1970 to realise the importance of team play, and Cruyff made the whole team better. Peter Ward was my Albion hero.
