Going back in time - Bob McNicol. Full-back in the early 60's and a real hard man. Famous for the 35 yard thunderbolt in an FA Cup match against Burnley (3-3) - then league champions. Small boy then but I remember it well. Sadly he and his family were killed in the Tenerife air disaster in 1980.

Paul (Tank) Clark, remember seeing him lose one of his boots during a tackle and carry on playing with only one boot, the ref finally stopped the game and made him put it back on. I think it was against Tottingham when we beat them 3 - 1 at the Goldstone in the old Div 2. I think he scored one of the goals as well.

thought about this one and you are right I don't remember him coming out of a tackle without the ball he also had a great game at Tottingham that season which if I remember right was a 0-0 draw.
boy could'nt we do with the likes of him and Nobby now.

It's a tough one. Case was a bit of an assassin but I would say Paul Clark or Ian Goodwin were harder. The real thug theough was Alex Dawson, he not only looked like one he was one. When he started playing barging the goalkeeper was still allowed and more than one keeper ended up sprawled in the back of the net thanks to him.

Mind you Nobby Horton could dish it out and what about that nutter we signed from Swansea (can't remember his name).

Re: Jimmy Case

He was a bit tasty, but had a reputation for being a bit slow, so I was very surprised once, while standing on the North Stand, to see him chase down and tackle from behind (before the professional foul days) an opposition centre forward who was hareing towards the South Stand goal

Saved a goal and only at the price of a booking :)
