My mum, daughter of a brickie, brought me up to believe, like her, that there are two sorts of people not to trust: working class tories and aristocratic socialists. Her personal view of Tony Benn was quite the opposite of most people's opinion: good politics, nasty man.

Interesting. I'd certainly back not trusting working class tories - turkeys voting for christmas and a danger to working people. But aristocrat socialists? I'd always give them the benefit of the doubt because they, despite their upbringing or class, have chosen to take the right side of the economic argument.

Much easier to be an aristocratic and/or wealthy socialist as you can then afford to spout all the old bollocks without it really having much of an effect on your own way of life!

Isn't that saying that the working class shouldn't have a political opinion other than socialist? Aren't they allowed to agree with capitalism? There are no "classes" in the UK, there are vile, pious, lazy wealthy and poor people, there are some great people contributing to society in various ways from a variety of perceived social backgrounds, we now put more emphasis on wealth and achievement other than class. We also value celebrity, but this will be sort lived in my opinion.

Not really. You see, if you're a 'socialist' and happen to be from a loaded background/family, then you've genuinely more to lose, no? There's not much chance of socialist policy in the UK at the moment, but there certainly has been social democratic economics in the past and there's been plenty of upper class folk who've supported those measures (which have a direct fiscal affect on them).

I'm not sure what you mean by "all the old bollocks" either, but I'm assuming you don't agree with left wing politics/economics.

Seems to remember there were some Brighton Collegers on NSC which gets your posh quotient up. As a scholarship boy who got 'asked to leave' at the end of only two years at the Junior School I think Im exempt.

Another vote for TLO. I used to go to his shop and he seems like a well educated cove.
Bevendean H. Another one I reckon.
