As an aside I've actually played on that pitch. My university bought, or was given, one of the plastic pitches from QPR when they changed it. It became the all-weather surface at Brunel University.

You know, the Thatcherite ones who turn up at Pride with their whistles, love the Albion, are into hard rock and didn't vote for Brexit.

We've got two of those as MPs in Brighton & Hove....

Socially Liberal Tories confuse the hell out of me.

Not sure why. I know plenty of people who are economically right-wing but very liberal on social matters and there are lots and lots of gay Tories.

I agree. But it rarely used to be the case. That's why I'm still getting my head round it.

It's a discussion I often have with one of my closest friends (who is a gay Tory- fully paid up member and activist).

Our social views are as one, that is why we are good friends, but I can't get my head round his Tory leanings. Still, good discussion for the cheese and wine parties, (one of which Mr Kirby was in attendance at). It was rather good actually, but I'm still a 'red'

Really? There are some Tories that I, as a Tory, dislike. Top of the list are the "hang 'em, flog 'em, single mums are scrounging slags" type. The late David Evans MP sort of Tory.

I read a very good piece a few years back about the gay Tory phenomenon that ran along the lines that they have always been there historically, pretty much on the same basis as gays in the army (don't say and we won't ask) and that, in fact, there is something about being a Conservative that resonates with a lot of gay people because it's the idea of being self-sufficient and self-made.

Historically, as well, there was a link between the Tories and the Church of England and between the Church of England and homosexuality. I don't for a minute mean any sort of malice in that, there used to be a type of gay person who found great comfort in the ethos and rituals of High Anglicanism. It's given quite a bit of prominence in the book "Queens" by Pickles which gave a brilliant insight into the gay subcultures during the 80s.

The Church of England reference is spot on. Subject of another discussion I had with a retired priest not so long ago. The church was always a safe gig for gay academics in the years of prohibition and beyond. A good number of Brighton priests are gay but this is by no means an isolated urban statistic. It's still very much at the stage where it's not discussed but is generally accepted in most parishes. His suggestion that 'at least eight' of the most senior clergy in this country are gay was an eye opener given the churches pandering to the African conservatives at international level.

bit of a personal one for me, but as a Christian I have to say "the Christian Tory". There are loads of them, partly because of lot of Christians grow up in pretty privileged settings and so "it's in their blood" and are pretty well off but Conservative policies (at least of this particular Conservative government) completely piss in the face of pretty much the entirety of Christ's teachings particularly in their attitudes towards the poor and vulnerable- which I find indefensible.

There's a superb twitter account called "Tory Jesus" which is a great parody of this particular type of hypocrite

Lying, toffee nosed scumbags who could not care less about the poor, the needy, the disabled, state schoolchildren, the ill and the hungry.
Only interested in helping the rich get richer, and making deep and unnecessary cuts to the most vulnerable in society.

I would have thought that after the debacle of Cameron, Osbourne, Gove etc that some Tory voters may just see them for what they are, but no, they carry on as if it never happened.
