I wish I had something better to do with my Sunday than join this cock measuring crap but sadly I don't so FWIW my ranking and reasonings would be as follows;

#1 Southampton.

Fa cup winners in 76, have spent the most consecutive seasons in the top flight and have had the higher attendances over the last 20 odd years.

#2 Portsmouth.

Champions of England twice, Fa Cup winners Twice, highest record attendance of the three. I'd possibly put Pompey above Saints but most of their success was donkey's years ago, they had their chance to cement their place as South coast number one but IMO are set for a big period of decline, we'll be above them in the coming years I reckon.

#3 Brighton.

With the exception of the previous 20 years historically very well supported in the lower leagues yet only achieved four years of top flight football in our 110 year history, one major honour in 1910 and beaten FA Cup finalists on one occasion.

#4 Bournemouth.

With the greatest of respect to them, when talking about size and honours they don't come close to any of us. Case closed.

Here's one way of calculating the biggest club - I'd be interested in what people think about the weighting:

All time average attendance (1 point for each 1,000)
Southampton 17,260 (17 pts)
Portsmouth 17,334 (17 pts)

Average attendance over last decade (2 point for each 1,000)
Southampton approx 26,000 (52 pts)
Portsmouth approx 19,000 (38 pts)

All time seasons in top flight (1 point for each season)
Southampton 35 (35 points)
Portsmouth 33 (33 points)

Seasons in top flight over last decade (2 points for each season)
Southampton 4 (8 points)
Portsmouth 7 (14 points)

Major trophies in history (10 points each)
Southampton 1 (10 points)
Portsmouth 5 (50 points)

Major trophies over last decade (10 points each)
Southampton 0 (0 points)
Portsmouth 1 (10 points)

Score:
Southampton 122
Portsmouth 162

I know this rather impacts on us too, but are you really counting the Charity Shield as a major trophy?

I told you I thought it was marginal. This is an opinion based thread, and that's my opinion. Preston North End have league titles in their bag, but I don't think of them as bigger than Southampton. Ipswich Town have a league title. Sunderland have more title wins than Chelsea. What does that tell us?

I think there are a few people on here voting for Pompey to wind up the Saints fans skulking around here because of next week's fixture

Foolishly & half baked drivel-Edna i agree with your reply apart from the last part,i genuinely feel Pompey have, are and will be again bigger than Southampton and i have nothing against the Saints-we are 3rd...as you say an opinion based thing, now if this were a thread about traffic police,we would both be in full agreement, what does that have to do with this i hear you ask? well 99% has nothing but the important 1 % means i respect your views...

Oh whoops, you are right there. Two League titles and two FA Cups should total 4 and should be 40 points! No, I wouldn't count the Charity Shield!

Anyway, I think you're all being a bit mean leaving AFC Totton out of this. 8-1 winners yesterday, I think it's sort of a bolt-on part of Southampton, into the FA Cup second round, and they look to be the perfect sized club to set up a rivalry with Bournemouth.

Alex is correct as i would put saints way above pompey, pompey have had great recent years but that was with money they never had and that in my book is cheating,so the fa cup should be scrapped.

Our potential of cause can match southampton no probs, but we have a long long way to go to catch up with saints and most of us will be dead by then:lolol:maybe we can win the european cup or something???

For now maybe. But the palace rivalry started out in a similar way (managers antagonising each other, clubs both competing for promotion).

I'm not saying I want it, I just don't like this attitude of "palace are our rivals you're not allowed to have any sort of banter with any other clubs' fans", or this sense that the rivalry withpalace is some how ordain by god, born from the flames of creation, as old as time. Man Utd have rivalries with city, liverpool, and arsenal. Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have a three way feud, Liverpool feud with everton and united. Clubs can have more than one rival, they can have more than one pair of spicy fixtures a season. If people want to feud with southampton, why can't they?

Here here!

It will probably never be the same level of Saints Vs Pompey or Brighton Vs Palace, but why not look forward to these fixtures a little bit more than your average fixture. It's all good fun!

Would we have to delete our FA Cup Final appearances in 1983 from history if you are talking about spending beyond a club's means?

Saints....think that's fairly obvious.

Portsmouth ahead by 30 points. Sorry!

(Not particularly biased against Southampton either. I used to live in Swaythling and Portswood).

I was shocked to learn that Southampton have only ever won two league titles (both Division 3 - now League 1) and the most recent of these was season 1959 -60.

Bearing this in mind Pompey must be ranked above them as top team in the South and we would have a good call to challenge them for second spot on trophies won if only Gordon Bloody Smith had put that one away ! :annoyed:

By your logic, Egypt, Uruguay and Japan would have more points than Spain, making them bigger.

Thinking Pompey are bigger than Saints is fine, while I personally disagree I can see why people might say Pompey too based on the last decade.

But to devise your own little crazy point scoring system, and then use it to prove your point, is weak.

Southampton have a top flight stadium and training facilities with a good chance of promotion this year.
Portsmouth have a run down stadium and presumably adequate training facilities and have just lost a manager to Nottingham Forest.
We have two thirds of a top flight stadium with plans to complete it and the training ground.

I personally think it is:

1. Southampton
2. Brighton
3. Portsmouth

Unless Portsmouth get a new ground, they are stuck at this level.
