Whitehawk FC - Chelsea of the county league!

Did anyone read the article in the Argus this week about Whitehawk FC?

Very interesting article about money being pumped into the club to get decent players and the potential of an upgrade on their current ground. All with a view to becoming 'Brighton's second biggest team'.

Apparantly Gatting is going to play for them again during the season, and he scored bags of goals there last time. A few other players have been signed as well from semi-pro level.

I've heard their players are being paid decent wedge as well. It all seems like fantasy football for the county league.

As my local side I wish them well, and it will be interesting to see how they 'upgrade' their ground for potential promotion into the Ryman league.

George Parris and Darren Freeman as joint managers as well! I wonder just how far they can climb up the ladder?

it could get very interesting should they ever start sniffing around the conference south. Would they ask to groundshare with us, or would they try and get planning permission to make their ground conference/league suitable. And if they did get it would the question be asked why didnt we build our ground at Whitehawk? (Gillingham fans would have had somewhere to park their caravans there :) )

to be fair our criteria was for a 22,000 seat ground, which you'd never get there, i'd imagine they'd be hoping for a few thousand at most really

i would however, prefer our reserves to play there rather than lewes

Would they try and play games at Withdean, which has of course staged Championship football without too much difficulty...should be good enough for BSS or Ryman games.

I'm of the opinion that they can build a nice little ground on their current county pitch.

Certainly enough room I would think to make a ground as good, if not better, than most Ryman clubs.

It's all about the money, and I'm led to believe they have plenty of it right now.

it will all end in tears if they are expecting instant success

only one club has had money chucked at it to progress from the county league and actually worked - eastbourne borough. and that was because they did it over time and had a sustainable fan base through being the representatives of a big town

you just have to look at the likes of st leonards, lewes, and then in the county league itself peacehaven and saltdean to see that it rarely works - when the money men become bored and pull it, the club will be utterly f***ed - especially as they are rumoured to be paying money up to £200 to players - how are they going to sustain that on gates of 30-60 if there is no sugar daddy?

Seeing as you are the Ian Walker of Sussex Non League have you been offered a triple figure wage to join?

It would be logical for Whitehawk to try for a higher level with the prospect of using Withdean for their homegames in a couple of season tim, by which time they could be quite high up the non league scale.

Spot on!

And the figures being paid to certain players are way north of £200!
