mmmmmmmm, some of those older fans have brought their kids up on old ideals at football, also there's a lot of older ST holders i believe, anyway will be interesting to see how it all pans out over the course of the season

Yep, both points are true. You imply that "new" fans are less likely to withstand a poor run of form than "old" fans? If so, I'd agree.

Also, being an "old" fan doesn't necessarily mean that you attend games, does it? ahem.

Finally, some older fans who used to be "old" fans are now "new" fans, or at least "newer" fans. Take myself as an example - I used to stand and watch from the North stand in the 70s, but now like my padded seat near the halfway line. Mind you, I do go to a lot of away games too, so get some of the "old" experience then.

You might think I'm horribly conflicted by all this. You'd be right.

How much has been converted into shares.

C'mon Rev! It's all in the Accounts - go check em out. From memory it's somewhere between £50m and £75m...

EDIT: During the year 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2013 it was exactly £40m. More have been converted since.

Then there is the question: "Where would we be without FFP rules?" - And I believe, the answer is, the Premier League.

You really think the reason we don't spend the money is FFP? I actually credit Bloom and Barber as being true believers in the self-sufficiency model, and I think we would be implementing FFP even if there would be no rules.

The bigger question is whether it's possible to be successful in the Championship while aiming for self-sufficiency.

Thats just it we are getting very careless with knowing whats going on,but then whats 25 million between friends. Can't help thinking tb was sold a pup when he started throwing his much needed cash in. The bottom line is we are losing shed loads of cash and it aint good.

The bigger question is whether it's possible to be successful in the Championship while aiming for self-sufficiency.

Even bigger question IMHO is whether it's possible to REMAIN in the Championship while aiming for self-sufficiency. Business model as it currently stands is patently skewed. Only promotion to the Premier League and careful managing of the subsequent parachute payments can possibly balance the books. Else we're looking at eight quid pies and two grand season tickets.

That's a total misrepresentation of what I said. I am not at all careless about it. I could find out precisely how much he's converted in about 10 minutes, and have done so previously. I didn't do so this time because I'm not your lackey. If you were worried about it, you could find out as easily as me; but no, it's far easier to do no research at all and just push an agenda than press some keys and look for yourself.

Didn't Bloom say we were losing hundreds of thousands every game at Withdean? It's about putting things in perspective re:this seasons current 'woes', football is now ridiculous really, clubs like us who have 20000 season ticket holders & get 25000 attendances at £30 odd per head STILL lose a lot of money on a monthly basis, I just wonder how far it can go on in football... All due to ridiculous wages & crazy transfer fees.

We are in safe hands, which is good to know, Bloom will never do what teams like Forest have done and spunk tens of millions ignoring FFP because he is a responsible owner, the only way this club will ever make money is if we get promoted and get parachute payments when we inevitably come back down but even that does not guarantee anything in reality, it just allows teams to spunk even more ridiculous transfer fees & wages - see Fulham, spending 11m on a striker AFTER being relegated. It beggars belief really what we & Bloom is trying to compete with.

With wages & transfer fees the way they are now & have changed in even the last 8 years I see no way the club could have survived without Bloom & at withdean.

We would be at Withdean but with the crowds having dwindled to 4,000, if we were lucky. With such low attendances, lack of commercial income and limited prospects the playing squad would have got weaker before we slipped into the Conference.

Crawley 2,000 attendance. Had to replace virtually entire squad this year because they couldn't afford any of their players from last season. Have owners who don't want to be there. Now, 13th in League One.

I just don't see us doing worse than that given Brighton's dramatically larger fan base and far greater potential to attract investors.

What's worse, being conflicted or confused ? I am a definite JCL. Moved to Sussex in my late 20s, only took a passing interest in the Albion until sometime during the Withdean years (mostly prompted by my son playing locally), went to a few games there (generally a dismal experience). Spent a lot of Saturdays watching Burgess Hill Town (mostly even more dismal). Having a bit more time on a Saturday (through becoming bored with golf) prompted me (and junior) to get season tickets. Love the Amex, but not expecting PL football, not expecting to win all the time and not going to stop just because we are having a poor run. Relegation wouldn't change this either (not that I think it'll happen). Going to an increasing number of away games now as well when I can fit it in and loving it. Feel like a new fan acting like an old fan. Can I get the padding removed from my seat at least ???

You really think the reason we don't spend the money is FFP?

Spend WHAT money, exactly? You make it sound as though the club is sitting on oodles of cash.

For the last two seasons for which accounts are available, our combined loss is £24.4million.

In other words, Bloom HAS spent HIS money to the tune of almost £25million - just to fund the operating losses, let alone the capital investments.
