Does second place mean a Champions League dropout team?

Our destiny reunion meeting with Wilfried once again is on a collision course. Just think of all those Galatasaray fans at Brighton station.

I think it is important for us to prioritise getting first place, which I believe we can do. We can do without two more games in January or whenever playing off for places in the Europa or Conference League. I can see us getting two wins tbh.

Top.
Albion draw in Athens. Marseille win v Ajax
Marseille 11 pts. Albion 8

Albion win v Marseille. Other match unimportant.
Albion 11, Marseille 11 … we finish top ‘cos we beat Marseille
Finish top. End of thread.

Group winners go straight to the round of 16 where they will be seeded and face one of the winners from the knock-out play-off round between the 2nd place sides and the teams who finished 3rd in the Champions League. Seeded teams will be home in the second leg.

2nd place teams will go into the knock-out play off round where they will be seeded and face a side who finished 3rd in the Champions League. Seeded sides play the second leg at home. Winners will advance to the last 16. Losers are out.

3rd place sides will transfer into the Conference League knock-out play off round where they will be unseeded and face a side who finished 2nd in the Conference League group stage. Unseeded sides will play at home in the first leg. Winners advance to the last 16 of the Conference League, losers are out.

4th place is eliminated.

For the play off round and the round of 16 teams from the same federation cannot be drawn against each other. From the Quarter Finals onwards there will be no seeding and teams from the same federation can be drawn against each other.

Due to changes in the tournament structure for European competition, from next season teams will no longer be able to transfer into the lower competition at the end of the group stage.

Got to go for the top spot and 2 less fixtures. Can’t see Ajax getting anything in Marseille though! If we beat AEK we’ll be guaranteed 2nd and will mean we’d need a draw or win in the last game to assure top - so a no pressure type of game…

I might be wrong but if both Albion and Marseille draw their next matches, or both win by the same margin, we will still be one point behind Marseille and will need to beat them at the Amex as our GD is worse. A draw won’t be enough for top spot, and we’d finish 2nd.

If both Albion and Marseille win, but we win by 2 goals more than Marseille, then our GD becomes better than Marseille's, and a draw at the Amex against them will see us finish top.

If we draw and they win in the next round of matches, we can still finish top by beating them at the Amex.

The one thing we must avoid is losing in Athens. If we do so, we’re almost certain to finish 3rd.
