On the contrary, if there was a release clause I believe we’d already have seen Mac paraded at Anfield, much as Joao Pedro was unveiled by us prior to the window. The FACT we haven’t suggests nothing agreed yet between the clubs, as per AN.

I seem to recall previous transfers have followed a similar pattern, where a very low fee has been discussed freely around the internet.
Those deals then took longer to complete than expected, for an undisclosed fee, with Naylor later tweeting something like "significantly north of the reported figures"

Ok, so to answer my own question (as the rest of you failed), he was only contracted until June 24. So we wouldn't necessarily get a lot for him this summer, and it seems he only signed a new contract in October, on the basis that it would have some sort of release clause.

Seems reasonable.

Did we not have our usual one year option on top of that, or is that what took it to June '24?

So far the best and only source of the release clause is what David Ornstein wrote a couple of weeks ago, where it's reported that BHA still has control over the outcome. The fact that Naylor reiterated Ornstein's wording of this yesterday afternoon suggests it's accurate.

I think Ornstein (or possibly Naylor after retweeting) said we have a say in the proceedings not control.

In The Athletic, on 26th April, Naylor stated that 'Losing Mac Allister and Caicedo would bring in upwards of £160million'

So if MAC is going for the fee that is stated, then Caicedo would have to go for £100m+

Or Naylor knew nothing of the release clause situation.

Exactly……and the ‘release’ clause (or whatever it is) may very well be much below what he could now be worth in a true open market, as he signed the new contract before the WC when he wasn’t a global WC-winning superstar. He could have easily not signed a new contract before the WC and left us for maybe 20-30m this summer (using Trossard as an example).

And that's the difference. All these outlets deal in the cluckbait and make a MASSIVE deal out of any potential big move, whereas Andy Naylor just does his job and reports what he is told.

His source is the club itself and, while they might sometimes be economical with the truth, at least it means he's less likely to look silly when something doesn't happen.

As I've said before, no-one really knows because so much can happen up to the point a player actually signs.

But with a World Cup winners medal already, perhaps Dad knows best. The 5 year Liverpool contract could be worth the best part of £40m.

You couldn’t get a more opposite departure to that of Trossard and the soon to depart Sanchez.

No I don't think so, since the new contract only runs to 2025, so it wouldn't have added anything if we already had a year's option.

It is understood that Liverpool, having agreed personal terms with the player, are finalising the last remaining details of the transfer of Alistair MacAllister with a medical due in the next couple of days.
