59/60 - we were relegated from the old second division into the third division south
and later went down to the old fourth division if I remember right before bouncing back to the third. The Bobby Smith season was probably my best

A PEDANT WRITES :
Sorry to have to correct you but the Albion weren't relegated from Div 2 until the end of Season 61/62

1957-1958: Division 3 South Champions - which we still are!
1958-1959: Division 2 (which it really was then) - a totally unexpected 12th considering Brian Clough scored 5 goals in the 9-0 defeat against Middlesborough in the first game of the season.

I must be really old!

? 1963/1964 season. Champions of Div 4....the Bobby Smith year.

No colour TV in those days, and the only footballs I ever played with at school were those lace-up brown (with a bit of worn leather on them) balls that almost knocked you out if you were daft enough to try and head it...LOL..!

First game versus York City. Brilliant blue sky, lush green pitch and a pure white ball that the players could kick and head for miles....!

Hooked.

Quite. I don't remember looking at League tables particularly. We had no expectations for the team that I remember beyond hoping we won.
Odd isn't it? There was none of this "Only one win in our first three games; that's our season over!" As you say, you just went to the game and hoped Brighton won. The first season I ever really remember the league table being 'important' was the time we finished runners-up to Villa.

I actually don't remember but I don't think we finished outside of the top 5 or 6 for about the 1st 4 seasons which was the rise from the 3rd division to the 1st. All went a bit Pete Tong once we reached the top tier :lolol: 1976ish onwards
