I think the problem is more the delivery, if David Beckham were whipping in our corners, Duffy would be in double figures every season.

I think you’re right. Not even Beckham though.

For me its not so much ability as it is technique. A lofted cross is easier to defend. We need to be rifling them in to the mixer. Harder to execute and harder to get on target but much harder to defend against. If we’re going to play the percentages, that we do, we may as well gamble a bit more and be more venomous with the deliveries.

We had 10 corners last night according to the BBC stats (seemed like MUCH more!) and each was as ineffectual as the last. We could have had corners all night and still been snuffed out. Compare and contrast with the visit of Stoke whose corners caused our defence horrendous problems every single time. Maybe the answer is to gee up the taker to try and score direct from them (like Darren Currie used to always try at Withdean) rather than go through the totally predictable motions of raising the arm in the air before hoofing the ball aimlessly into the box for big defenders to clear without undue effort.

Last one I saw was Murray at Brum last season,but I don't get out much.

I think (from my memory) last season, it was one goal every 54 corners scored. Newcastle scored quite a few more goals than us, which was almost entirely down to set piece goals.

I always thought 14 or over is a lot of corners in a game for one side.

Very few teams score regularly from corners in the top flight. I remember hearing a coach/manager talking about attacking/defending corners once (can't remember who) who basically said that the only way you score from a corner is if the defending team make a mistake. Teams in the Prem are generally better drilled and of a high quality so it becomes very difficult to score from them.

Last season the team with the worst conversion rate in the PL from corners was ... Man City (4 from 259, or 1.5pc). Next worst: Man Utd (4/208, 1.9pc). Then it was Sunderland, who had three, but all in the last few weeks. So there's little or no correlation between a team's finishing position and how many corners they convert, because none of them convert enough for it to make much of an impact.

The best percentage was WBA (15 from 149, 10pc), which looks like a real outlier as it's miles clear of the next two: West Ham (11/163, 6.7pc) and Everton (10/181, 5.5pc).

I’d add though that of those teams that have “done well” with corners all of them are regarded as survival specialists, or at least would consider corners to be a genuine goal scoring opportunity. IE Playing for a corner, so to say.

The more elite clubs have other outlets and channels to go down, like Ibra, Agero etc and a corner to them is a penny to the pound. Fairly worthless currency as their game revolves around a much more dynamic and free flowing approach.

I’d put Albion in the former in that we play in a way that wants to harness the benefit of corners and if that’s the case I’m bemused at how shit we are at / unlucky with them. And if we’re not going to then we need to change our attitude towards attack when playing at the Amex. Or expect a few more home draws to come.
