My best mate for 11years, had a heart condition. It took a couple of thou and many vet visits to keep him going for another 3 months, but it allowed me to give him a long goodbye.
It hurt badly for months afterwards, and actually those feelings will never diminish.
A pet can be just like having a child. You nurture and teach them, spend all your time with them, but unless they're a parrot or a tortoise you have to know that they're going to last a limited amount of time on this earth.
Around the time my dog died, a friend died on his motorbike - so I adopted his dog. She adopted me too, as she knew what was going on, and she's been a great friend for 6years now.
