My brother researched our family tree as far back as records allow. Turns out my bloodline is solely English all the way back. No Irish passport for me.

So sorry, I traced mine, My ancestors came over in 1850ish and are German and Scandinavian, marrying in that circle within London, PPF would be jealous, but no Irish in my bloodline. Wonder if I can go back to Germany ?

Probably not, as thinking about it, they fought against the Germans in the 1st WW & in the 2nd in Burma & India when they lived there. So that might put the kibosh on that route back.

I don't think that's true of Portugal. They do have a 'golden visa' scheme but it needs you to buy a property worth E500k or less if in a designated regeneration zone and spend at least14 days/year there (from memory) which gives you the right to apply for residency.

Portugal did have, and may still have, a scheme whereby if a UK national bought any residential property in Portugal, and spent more than 180 days a year in Portugal, they would treat you as a Portuguese tax resident and exempt you from tax on your worldwide income for up to 10 years.

That did used to be the case up until a couple of years ago.

Spain's requirements for residency is a single income of 23000 euros a year plus 7000 more for joint. Or go for the 'Golden Visa', non working and a property purchase of upwards of 5000,000e. Then of course, if not of retirement age, is the compulsory purchase of comprehensive medical insurance, and that's not cheap.

On a personal basis of living here for 10 years +, I would never again purchase property here again - for many reasons - demand is nothing like the UK and selling a house can be a very long, protracted business, and expensive compared to the UK. If you have property to sell in the UK before moving here - CAUTION!! It could very easily become part of your income for the first year you live here and you will be charged tax on it in Spain. Trust me tax is not so kind here as in the UK. Personal allowances are low, something like 6500e per person per year. You are far better off keeping your UK home and become a 90/180 day tourist, gives you all the benefits without the costs and taxation.

Easiest way is to have an Irish grandparent and apply for Irish citizenship by foreign birth. Then you can get an Irish passport and you have the right to residence anywhere in the EU. If that is not possible then you need, generally, around 10,000 euros in the bank and a guaranteed income of around 1300 euros per month, either through employment or pension. These are the figures for Portugal and may be lower in Eastern Europe but higher in Western Europe. Another option is to get a firm job offer from an EU-based company.

Need to wait 5 years though, to get residency. In Cyprus 300k property investment for residency in 6 months, 2 Million gets you citizenship in 6 months.

Edit: The Citizenship in 6 months is no longer available as of November last year, residency still applies but it's non schengen so doesnt give you schengen travel rights. Looks like Portugal is a better option if you have the cash, as you can have residency without actually being resident, and then get citizenship after 5 years.

The tax scheme you mention is the Non Habitual Residency (NHR) scheme, which has now changed so that you pay 10% for 10 years instead of zero. It is not a residence visa. The NHR is open to any foreign national who takes out Portuguese residency. The Golden visa scheme (property investment) only requires you to spend a few days per year in Portugal to retain residency but you cannot get the NHR tax scheme unless you spend 183 days per year in the country. Golden visa is not the only way to get residency though. If you get residency through a D7 (employment or retirement or entrepreneur) visa you don't need to make a property investment but you do need to stay for 183 days per year to retain the residency (and to get the NHR tax break).

I got my Irish passport last summer, but it took about 15 months - it's worth the wait! [nb: my first trip abroad using my Irish passport was a delight - flew to Alicante...got snarled up in an immigration queue with a couple of plane-loads arriving from the UK. But there were some airport staff going up and down the queue asking whether anyone had an EU passport. I was the only one, and I literally had a personal escort through the border check whilst the other 300 or so in the queue looked on in envy!]
