Personally just waiting for the wee krankie to have independence vote - then Scotland can get back in the EU so the future of my children us hopefully sorted

I'm not ENTIRELY sure that even in the outside chance of another referendum in the foreseeable future that your wishes would necessarily come true.

First, they would need a victory, secondly and more importantly is the EU taking up the offer of Scotland's generous offer of membership.

Waiting to successfully rejoin the EU would be a longer term open ended strategy surely ?

Well who knows? I could actually see us going cap in hand to Brussels in the not so distant future begging to be let back into the fold.

The problem is, that if we were successful, it would be very much on the EU member states conditions, and we would be spending Euros not Pounds.

I think you’ll find even Scotland’s dire economic Perlman even outpaces most of Eastern European that have got in / are due to get in. Yes Spain will rattle its sabre because there scared of Catalonia/ Basque using it as precedence but it won’t come to it

Really !!!

Economically - According to the IMF, their GDP per capita is around double that of the UK, making them the 4th richest country in Europe (in per capita terms). The UK is 22nd.

Politically - A parliamentary, democratic republic seems more advanced to me than a constitutional monarchy with unelected clerics involved in law making.

Socially - That one's more open to debate.

You need time or money.

Ireland is a good route in as UK citizens can still work there automatically ( but you don't then get EU citizen rights to move elsewhere ). So you'll need to get a job there, live there and try to eventually get citizenship.

You'll need £20K - £25K or so CASH in the bank ( money tied up in property won't count ) to get a Spanish residency I think I read a while back. If you have children you'll need an additional ( lesser ) amount for each of them.

On a Non-Lucrative Visa (i.e. you're not allowed to work) you can get Residency in Spain on an income of around 27k euros for one person, approx 7k per extra person (so could work if on a decent pension)
or
savings of around the same amount per year of the Visa (3 years I think), therefore 80k ish euros for one, plus the 21k for each extra person.

In which case is the Union Jack you have as yolur avatar about to be replaced by the Irish Tricolour or the flag of the EU?

You can't have it both ways you know

A good point CS. However, as proud as I am of my Irish background, I am very much English. As I am always politely reminded by my cousins when visiting Dublin.

To be fair that’s the idea [emoji6]

I thought the idea of the parody was to be even more stupid than the original. I think PPF may have vastly underestimated Ppf's expertise in that area :lolol:

My brother researched our family tree as far back as records allow. Turns out my bloodline is solely English all the way back. No Irish passport for me.

To be fair your ’parody’ account is definitely ’more stupid’ than the original one…… [emoji6][emoji23][emoji106]

If you are English can't you just apply for an Irish passport?

It's still unbelievable that he said that, and I've heard that clip a few times now! What an ignorant ****. It makes you wonder what sort of research the European Research Group do if one of their members is so fundamentally misinformed.

Easiest way is to have an Irish grandparent and apply for Irish citizenship by foreign birth. Then you can get an Irish passport and you have the right to residence anywhere in the EU. If that is not possible then you need, generally, around 10,000 euros in the bank and a guaranteed income of around 1300 euros per month, either through employment or pension. These are the figures for Portugal and may be lower in Eastern Europe but higher in Western Europe. Another option is to get a firm job offer from an EU-based company.

I don't think that's true of Portugal. They do have a 'golden visa' scheme but it needs you to buy a property worth E500k or less if in a designated regeneration zone and spend at least14 days/year there (from memory) which gives you the right to apply for residency.
