Once you've selected your 'username' it can't be changed. Or at least not at the moment - maybe FB will deliver that functionality one day.

I just can't figure out the point of this. If people wanted to find you, hook up and chat, they knew your name and presto.
Now there's this handle thing.... so what, and why do I need it?

The point is that companies could register their brand name. And Facebook can flog them advertising. And spammers can try to register names in order to help their search engine rankings.

I'm not on commission, but is that right? i'm sure I read somewhere recently that it was MySpace that was reporting declining usage, Friends Reunited is nearly dead and Facebook was winning the personal networking (or whatever the correc term is) war? Not that I'm any expert, mind!

What are the chances that the person you know with a particular name is the one who chose the URL if there are lots of people with the same name?
