Jimmy Case in the 1983 Quarter-Final v Norwich.

After lengthy deliberation with the linesman who'd raised his flag, the goal was given.

The rest is history...

Got to be Lee Steele for me as well. He was miles offside, and since pretty much everyone else at the top lost that day it was almost promotion guaranteed. A great day.

Didn't Zamora also score a 'goal' at Bradford a few seasons back for us to win one nil which was so OBVIOUSLY not over the line it was laughable?

I didn't think that the ball crossed the line for one of our goals at Walsall last season, though plenty of people (including the ref) did.

To the contrary, I remember Watford putting the ball in the back of the net in front of the North at the Goldstone...one of our defenders kicked it out and both teams played on, they didn't even appeal for a goal to be given...bizarre!

Is it just an old wives tale that Kit Napier once scored when someone blew a whistle in the crowd and the opposition goalkeeper put the ball down for the "kick" and Kit tapped it in?

If it never happened,it should have!

Well kind of. This was in a game v Chesterfield in November 71. There was a goaline scrimmage and their goalkeeper assumed he'd ben fouled during the melee. However the ref-one Clive Thomas who some will remember- hadn't blown his whistle. When the 'keeper puit the ball down on the 6 yard line to take the free kick, Kit Napier, seemingly alone amongst everyone else at the ground, realised this, ran in and tapped the ball into the net. Cue mayhem all round. But the goal was given!

Something similar happrend in the night matach at Reading a few years back.

Gary Hart's handball goal to give us a 1-0 win, 5 mins into injury time at home to Southend in 2000 was a chirpy moment!

Indeed. I was there and tbh no one realised that we had scored till Ben Roberts turned round infront of us and started punching the air. Still to this day cant believe the ref gave it.

It did happen, sort of. It was against Cheaterfield (again). There was a mellee at the south goal and their keeper thought a free kick had been given so placed the ball down and walked back into the net, turning his back on the ball, so he could get a run up to take the 'free kick.

Kit Napier, an Albion legend, was standing close by and ran up to smash the ball into the net leaving the keeper bemused. the ref had not blown for any infringement so the goal stood.

I remember it well and, in my old scrapbooks 9somewhere) the Argus had some good pics including one that clearly showed the keeper gathering the ball under pressure from his own defenders, no Albion forward was involved (somethings never change!) so it was all down to keeper error.

Chesterfield had a reputation for producing top keepers (Gordon banks) and this keeper (Brown or Stevenson) went on to better, poss even international, things.

BISH BOSH, well done Sir, for beating me to it!

Actually it did although I don;t remember the whistle, it was against Chesterfield at the Goldstone. The roar for the goal actually slowly rippled up the from the South Stand where the goal was scored as people realised that the goal was allowed.

withdean, were you there that day ?

This was the new years day game 1977.later in the year 30,755 plus me turned up to see us beat Sheff W at the Goldstone, leaving us top.We then lost the re arranged Swindon game on May 10th (1-2).We dropped to 2nd,which is where we finished, and were promoted.

But 30,000 at the Goldstone, and terraces and all.So to all who say Falmer will never be filled, blah blah,I suspect it will be.

I made it to the abandoned game, but not the rematch.............and their four goals all looked offside/were flukes/bad decisions. From where I was standing. In the rain.
