The site that is now occupied by hotel du vin, what were the two previous iterations?

Hennekys was one.

Saw the best Wild West style bar room brawl ever in there. Chairs, tables, coatstands, bar shelves collapsing, mirrors broken behind the bar etc, like a film scene it was!

You should have been under the Salisbury Hotel (now Brighton Hotel) one night on my mates 18th, 1982, sounds similar.

Eastern Rd used to have a fair few good pubs Inc eastern, great eastern etc and then into Edward Street that I read recently had 20 pubs on it once

I've found 25 so far and historically the street with the most pubs in Brighton, most were lost to slum clearances and street widening:

Pavilion 3 Edward Street 1867 1917 D
Dog Tray 10 Edward Street 1877 1985 D Rebuilt 1936
Rising Sun 11 Edward Street 1854 1911 D
Beckenham Tavern 13 Edward Street 1867 1871 D
Elephant Tavern 14 Edward Street 1839 1936 D Previoulsy William IV
Plasterers Arms 21 Edward Street 1859 1907 D
Three Kings 26 Edward Street 1839 1939 D Stag - 1839
Painters Arms 29 Edward Street 1854 1909 D
London Unity 36 Edward Street 1867 1954 D Became Royal Standard in 1877
Great Globe 38-39 Edward Street 1859 1965 D
Royal Dragoon Arms 50 Edward Street 1884 1895 D
Golden Boot 56 Edward Street 1859 1894 D
Tierney Arms 64 Edward Street 1859 1911 D Became cinema then Boys Club
Duke of Baden 67 Edward Street 1885 1903 D
Vulcan Tavern 70 Edward Street 1854 1936 D
Town Hall 71 Edward Street 1854 1914 D
Rose of England 86 Edward Street 1867 1906 D
Abysinnia Arms 91a Edward Street 1869 1907 D
Park Tavern 95 Edward Street 1859 1929 D
Kerrison Arms 101 Edward Street 1859 1940 D Became Shamrock in 1884
Star Inn 104 Edward Street 1877 1905 C
Leconfield Arms 116 Edward Street 1867 OPEN Now JW Lennon’s
Alliance 140 Edward Street 1867 C
Little Globe 153 Edward Street 1839 1970 C
Thurlow Arms 161 Edward Street 1804 OPEN Now Jury’s Out

Copied and pasted out of my database; first date is opening, second closing, D means demolished, C means converted. Sourced via old street directories so some of the dates may be out. I've yet to discover the exact date the Alliance closed.

I currently have 553 pubs in my database which is limited to the area of the old parish of Brighton and I've yet to add any of the newer ones

Very interesting. Any reason for the higher than average concentration of pubs in one area?

Historically the area north of Edward Street was the poorest in Brighton, Carlton Hill the next street to the north had 15:

Carlton Arms 1 Carlton Hill 1884 1909 D
George IV 16 Carlton Hill 1862 1905 D
Sack of Shavings 29-30 Carlton Hill 1889 1933 D
Alma Tavern 32 Carlton Hill 1867 1926 D
Victory Inn 47 Carlton Hill 1884 1907 D
Devonshire Arms 52 Carlton Hill 1867 2007 C
Queens Park Inn 57 Carlton Hill 1879 1895 D
Rising Sun 60 Carlton Hill 1884 1934 D
Morning Star 61 Carlton Hill 1867 1894 D
Italian Arms 80 Carlton Hill 1889 1954 D Became Carlton Arms in 1940
John Bull 84 Carlton Hill 1854 1940 D
Foresters Arms 90 Carlton Hill 1892 1960 D
Carlton Tavern 92 Carlton Hill 1854 1919 D
Brewers Arms 93 Carlton Hill 1867 1879 D
Star Tavern 95 Carlton Hill 1854 1933 D

All demolished even the lone surviving building was rebuilt in the 1930s.

The Medusa bar in Preston St has changed its name a few times. How many can you remember?

but whilst we are at it, who remembers the name of the 'wine bar' in the 80's at the beginning of the entrance to The Lanes as you enter from North Street on the left hand side and you enter through their courtyard, think it has been a pizza place in recent times .....

Clarence's?

Under the sea
Correct.

Now a question I actually don't know the answer to, but am curious.

The Sidewinder has surely not always been so known. So what did it used to be?
