Do you remember there was a campaign which was "Plant a tree in '73" and they ran it again the next year as "Plant more in '74". I thought that was national, but I wonder if it was related to Dutch Elm Disease?

And a year later everyone was saying: “Watch them die in ‘75”.

National: When Swedish PM Olof Palme was killed in 86. I heard it on the radio and broke the news to my parents who thought it was a very morbid thing for a 7-year old to lie about. We had a long stern talk about not making things up and I was sent to bed without dinner before they realised it actually happened.

International: The Berlin Wall coming down. My mum was crying tears of joy in front of the telly and I just couldn't understand what the fuss was about. Looked like any ugly old wall to me.

Edit: Maybe silly to edit old posts like this, but added the "tears of joy" part since I realised it wasn't obvious.

Probably mentioned by someone already, but been lazy and not read through the thread..............SAS storming the Iranian Embassy in 1980.

Only 6 at the time but obviously very memorable for anyone who saw it live on TV, irrespective of their age at the time

That's a damned good question.

Had a little think and the first I remember is the Torrey Canyon. I was 4.

Edit, TC was the national news. International will probably be moon landing and local haven't a scoobie.

Absolutely great thread. The hard part is separating genuine memories from later acquired knowledge.

International - Israel/Arab war, early 70s, but can definitely recall the Palestinian terrorist attack at the Munich Olympics in 72.

National - Princess Anne wedding

Local - Definitely Dutch Elm Disease, but maybe Maria Colwell murder.

JFK assassination, Winston Churchill’s funeral and the first moon landing immediately spring to mind from my childhood - all on black and white tv of course.

Great thread - I think all mine have already been said but I’d opt for:

62/63 winter - as a 4yo I thought all the snow/ice was great
Aberfan stood out for me as I remember it in primary school(I know it was South Wales but I’ve counted it as National)
JFK and my parents reaction to it

I also bizarrely remember being in Ireland when Jim Reeves’ death was announced

Local - winter of 62/3 lived near Brighton seafront at the time
National - Great Train Robbery 1963
World - JFK assassination 1963. Was at Cubs when the caretaker came running in and said the President’s dead.

that live Iranian hostage thing which interrupted the tv schedules was quite gripping. This is the oldest I can currently remember.

robin.jpg

I used to know Robin Horsfell, in the photo. He, being one of the SAS who stormed the embassy. He lived in Ardingly as did I for 14 years. The day he was decorated at the palace he returned to the Ardingly British Legion to celebrate. He had though by the time of getting back rather celebrated and had to be carried in from the taxi shoulder high in to the club. Not sure he remembered much of the evening.

He went on to become a cricket umpire, though only minor counties. Most of the time though he was seen pissed in the club.

While aware of events earlier that these, I don't recall how I experienced them.

Local - Winter 1967 School was closed and we were sent home, the snow was virtually up to my waist and I recall someone skiing down the bank in Victoria Park
National - Decimalisation
International - Moon Landing

Friday 8th December 1967, an unexpected day time blizzard dumped a foot of snow on the Brighton area.

My young aunt was in Brighton with my nan, and got trapped in Rottingdean with a mass of other bus passengers and car drivers. The White Horse sheltered everyone until a break in the drifts was ploughed over that weekend.

IRA blew up my uncles neighbour in a small village called Hankham near Polegate. I was about 8 years old but it still sticks in my mind. Deceased was a Conservative MP.

Remember that and the horror account from his wife
