America's moon landing in 1969 I believe. That seemed truly incredible.

I was born in 1953

Local: John Pull being shot dead in Lloyds. bank in Durrington in 1960 - he had been a customer at my dad’s shop.
National - Macmillan resigning and Alec Douglas-Home becoming PM - 1963.
International - Yuri Gagarin first man in space - 1961.

Edit - I actually remember the Profumo affair and Christine Keeler, which broke in 1962.

I used to know Robin Horsfell, in the photo. He, being one of the SAS who stormed the embassy. He lived in Ardingly as did I for 14 years. The day he was decorated at the palace he returned to the Ardingly British Legion to celebrate. He had though by the time of getting back rather celebrated and had to be carried in from the taxi shoulder high in to the club. Not sure he remembered much of the evening.

He went on to become a cricket umpire, though only minor counties. Most of the time though he was seen pissed in the club.

Brilliant. Hero.

I remember the scenes so well, the black clad SAS guys against the white building was iconic. And that was the time when a news flash or “breaking news” meant something very serious was going down and not Ronaldo has re-signed for Man U.

Absolutely great thread. The hard part is separating genuine memories from later acquired knowledge.

International - Israel/Arab war, early 70s, but can definitely recall the Palestinian terrorist attack at the Munich Olympics in 72.

National - Princess Anne wedding

Local - Definitely Dutch Elm Disease, but maybe Maria Colwell murder.

I remember this specifically as my local park, Tarring rec, lost a run of trees along the Church road edge.
It was quite dramatic seeing the park so massively altered.

Local Mods and Rockers fighting on the seafront.
Although I thought that a boy went missing in Woodingdean while I went to the Primary school. Googling only found one from 1967 but I was at Westlain then.

National The Profumo scandal

International Marilyn Monroe found dead.
Not the most important but earliest I recall.

I thought the thread would remind me of X, Y & Z but seemingly not, so I'm happy with my choices.

One take away from all of this:-

Iran - from the ousting of the Shah to the London embassy hostages has cast a very long shadow, which some 40+ years later still hasn't been concluded.

Born in 84...

Local - The great storm of 87
National - Nothing springs to mind to be honest
International - Berlin Wall coming down in 89. My Mum was from East Berlin and had escaped to the West aged 19 with one of the fake passports put together by art students so that was an amazing moment in our house. It was when I figured out what tears of joy were!

Brighton factually.....
Born in the summer of 69.....

Local: The heatwave of 76, lived in Aldershot at the time and used to visit family in Witley and Godalming, remember fires throughout Witley commons.

National: I never have watched the news really - but this struck me, like a bomb - 19 March 1988, two corporals in the British Army were killed during an IRA funeral after inadvertently driving into the cortege - the killings were shown on tv, I was sickend

International: Elvis dying....

Yep, local for me was Brighton going up in 79 but I hear that doesn't count so the next big one was the Athena B. My mum still has a photo of us in front of it and me with my blue and white Brighton bar scarf on.

National - storming the Iranian Embassy. Watched it live.

International - Falklands. I counted them out and I counted them back in again. Classic.

Who told you that!

It's not that it doesn't count, it's just not 'news'.

My initial objection was due to me thinking 'if I don't caveat The Albion out of the equation 'local' will just be everyone writing promotion in 1979'.
I think the thread is all the better for it, esp when in fact, most of the contributors would appear to be celebrating winning the Charity Shield.

:lolol:

You and I seem very close in age Stat. I read your OP whilst nodding and going "yeah, I remember that". Also while farting and making other involuntary noises.

But LOCALLY a team getting promotion at the end of the season is always NEWS. It just isn't nationally. There are places where Cyril from the Butchers retaining the annual Cribbage Invitational is NEWS.

So everyone of our age and location should have said "Brighton getting promoted in 79".

Local - the Great Omani performing a handstand on the edge of the cliffs at Peacehaven (or Saltdean?) unsure of date?
National - start of the Northern Ireland troubles/ riots in 1968/69
International - assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963. I was only 3 but remember vividly how shocked and scared my Mum and Dad were when they heard the news.

I do remember really loving the 1979 general election because of all the posters and billboards. We went driving to relatives houses and I remember enjoying seeing the different posters and bigger boards in fields and gardens everywhere and how exciting it all looked.

It wasn't the first as I remember being very impressed with the Silver Jubilee before that - and like many children growing up in the 1970s I certainly remember the power cuts and how much I enjoyed them when we had to get out the candles. I'm not sure there was a time when I first became aware of international news stories - everyday we had radio 4 six o'clock news on at dinnertime, so I heard it all the time. I remember the reports about the murder of Airey Neave, certainly, and Camp David in 1978 as well - though I didn't really understand what that was.

But then we might have missed out on:-

Local - probably when my school made the local news after a teacher attacked a pupil
.

Which despite being serious and definitely not funny does have me smiling and noting 'ah happy dayz'.

I'm a bad bad man, who's going to hell.
