Old bloke alert.....

The first thing I remember on TV was Winston Churchill's funeral

I don't remember the World Cup Final though, which was two years later

Cuba missile crisis, watching the news on BBC black & white and especially my dads reaction - he was really scared a new world war was about to start.

Local and international - Falklands war as my dad went off to fight and so cameras down at the docks to see the ship go off and I was briefly seen in the crowd 1982
National - Charles and Diana's wedding as I was on a scout camp and we watched it on a tiny black and white telly hooked up to a car battery. 1981 - I was 9

I do think I remember the storming of the embassy in 1980 but it may be just a big thing in my time that I should remember!

In the same way I remember the Fireman strikes in 1977 as my army dad was drafted in to drive the Green goddesses but as I would have been 5 I'm sure it is a passed down memory.

Local - Drought reporting and Dutch Elm disease - 76
National - Princess Anne & Cpt Mark Phillips wedding - 73
International - Elvis Death - 77

Do you remember there was a campaign which was "Plant a tree in '73" and they ran it again the next year as "Plant more in '74". I thought that was national, but I wonder if it was related to Dutch Elm Disease?

Two main stories stick in my mind. The world cup in 1966 and Nobby Styles skipping across Wembley and the disaster that was Aberfan. I was nine when they happened. Aberfan was shocking.

Churchill’s funeral.

I particularly remember the cranes dipping as the funeral barge went by in the Thames.

Local, my Dads workmate committing suicide. Or, a tug of love case with my foster sister’s real sister involved between her foster parents who were a bit creepy, and the real Mum. The first time I can remember of the press being absolute assholes.

International, JFK.

Local: Maria Colwell murder
National/international : SR-71 flying from New York to London in under 2 hours
International/interstellar : The Apollo moon landings

Maria Colwell shared a social worker with my foster sisters. Another case of the press being assholes.

I think it was the 3-Day Week in Jan - Feb 1974 .

I was 5 at the time and can remember my family having to light candles and paraffin lamps in the evenings.

Reading through this thread, the only event that seems to fit all 3 criteria, local, national, and international is the bombing of the Grand.

I recall The Hungerford Massacre breaking. I don’t remember much about the actual incident from the time but I remember my Dad’s face going ashen during the news-flash.

that live Iranian hostage thing which interrupted the tv schedules was quite gripping. This is the oldest I can currently remember.

Yep. Allowing the terrorists inside to watch the operation live from outside. Or is that an urban myth?
