What was Brighton like in 1984?

I seem to recall that BHS in Churchill Square had a restaurant where we'd eat lunch when Mum was on a shopping trip in Brighton... but mostly I recall clambering over that awful sculpture outside!!

Biggest difference between Brighton of '84 and now though is the number of cars!

Seen one of the houses I grew up in, after it had been a wood of tree's in Portslade old village opposite the St George...but its an amazing page, that I check regularly. My little sis lives on it.

I used to go to the ABC Cinema in East Street, I think people referred to as the Cannon. Viewed many great films there. Happy days

The cinema was called The Savoy , EMI sold off the ABC cinema chain to an Australian venture capitalist who then sold it on to new owners who rebranded the chain to Cannon.

vinyl roof cortina!

In 1984 I had a light blue MKIV Cortina with a black vinyl roof.
Probably the most reliable car I've ever had, till I bought a brand new one here for the first time.

Definitely a Ford Anglia, in the traditional blue with white roof.
I remember when the police used to use them and painted the doors white.

the highlight of 1984 in Brighton was, undoubtedly the opening of

RED RAT RECORD RENTALS in sydney st.

They would hire out an LP for, i think 50p a night (with a deposit) and you could tape the f*cker before returning the vinyl. Good music, on the cheap.

There was another one of these (also did videos) up on the Dials when I moved to Brighton (maybe a couple of years later) - the name escapes me....

Great call, had forgotten all about that. I did not record them however, simply played them to see if I liked then purchased from Our Price or Boots! To record would be illegal. (Blimey, forgot about BASF CrO2 (silver), basic BASF (yellow/orange) and FeO2 (Green). Never did any home taping though.

I spent lots of time with my nan at flat 2, 35 Compton Avenue, Seven dials in 1984. The dials then were in a real state, most of the flats were either occupied by little old ladies or skag heads, with the latter terrifying the former!

On the other hand, thanks to the old system of Assured Tennancies, she was paying £30 per month for a two floor, two bedroom flat!

Not quite 1984, but I'm currently (re)watching 'Brighton Rock' - the shots of Brighton in 1946 are BRILLIANT. Great film too, well worth a watch.

Not sure if it was even the 80s, but I seem to have a lingering memory of seeing the film 'Soldier Blue' in a cinema at the top right hand side of West street....if it there was a cinema what is it now?
I may be confusing it with the one where bk is in North St now, but really have a vague memory of it being West St.

We lived in Princes crescent in Hove in 1984.

I remember my Mum being woken up by the IRA Bomb at the Grand, the day after we walked along the seafront to gawp at the damage.

It was the season I started going to away games with mates rather than my family, Oxford away was the first one - we lost! Went on the supporters coach arranged by Margaret Sanderson and Sue Huffer.

I saw Ultravox at the Brighton Centre, my first gig. I thought the venue was brilliant and massive - shows what I knew!

Cant say that much about Brighton as spent my time in Hove, mainly playing cricket in the grounds of Hove museum and Art Gallery in Pembroke Crescent. We used the benches as the slip fielders and remember the game we had with some old man asleep in our slip field, but we carried on! Under age drinking in the Hangleton Manor and student nights at The Event!

I saw Ultravox at the Brighton Centre but thought it was earlier than 1984. I thought they were pretty poor in concert. Remember a sort of lampshade coming down for one of their songs to make it look atmsopheric. Think Midge Ure was sitting on a stool or something like that for that particular song.
