Not from me, I always thought the West encouraging uprisings doesn't make sense because it condones and glorifies killing. It teaches people that it is ok to kill for what they believe in. Had we not supported the idea of toppling of Assad there wouldn't have been a war against IS in Syria to choose not to help in, and we would have avoided all this mess.
Or even 'to it'. Tsk indeed.

I think Bush & Blair kicked WW3 off in 2003, but history hasn't named it yet.
Pretty much agree with that. Saddam Hussein, Colonel Gaddafi and Assad all were / are pretty nasty pieces of work, but the west's actions have lead, or at the very least contributed, to the present alarming rise in extremist Islam - be careful what you wish for!
I said something similar in a thread on here a year or so ago (when Syria started kicking off) - and some knobhead accused me of being a Daily Mail reader!

Of course human life is more important than a pile of ruins.
But it does grate that ISIS are trying to destroy culture and history. Reminds me of the Nazis "Burning Books".
Its seems incredible that an organisation can get so wound up about some ruins in the sands. Shall we go and blow up Stonehenge perhaps?
ISIS seem to want a very pure form of Islam. Except for mobile phones, Facebook and YourTube of course.

I was working in Saudi for a bit in 2002. Very strong view from the locals there was that they hated Saddam and a lot of what he did, but accepted he had the region by the balls, preventing the extremists rising and that taking him and his regime out would instantly destabilise the whole region.

Yep, Saddam and Gaddafi were weak and we could dictate to them. Bashar al-Assad didn't have a history of human rights abuse, though his dad may have ruled with too firm a fist before him. Other than that Assad was a medical student in London and always came over as Westernised.
Islamic State was born from al-Qaida in Iraq, who are Saddam's ex officers, generals and army. They are running this campaign.
This is a good BBC doc and they go into how IS spawned from within Iraqi prison camps.

what you are basically saying is, keeping those tyrannical leaders in power was great because it stopped another tyrannical power. net gain? nothing.
it was founded by a Jordanian and joined al-Qaida when it suited them to do so. we must stop recasting links of a few as evidence that this is somehow the west's fault. a few Iraqi officers (from a broadly secular army) does not mean this is the Iraqi army; a few with al-qaida links does not mean its from that group (its too informal a group anyway). we have various people seeking power and/or religious objectives jumping from one bandwagon to the next. esssentially the ethos behind ISIL has been a fundemental part of some in Islam for centuries, to creating a religious lead caphilate. the west has only precipitated this to happen now, rather than at some other point.
