pasty, the Netherlands is a popular place for people to live, I worked over there for just over 6 years in total, hard not to learn some of the language...even if like me you worked in an organisation where most of the business was done in English.

I've noticed this on holiday in Barcelona in the past.

You try so hard to make an effort to converse in their own language and they simply click into (usually near-perfect) English, leaving you feeling just a little embarrassed and inadequate.

it tends to be so frustrating especially when youve just said something that is very difficult! even though they can see u struggling they will let you stick it out until you've finished!! :lolol: ???

The biggest compliment I ever had, in trying to speak a foreign language, was from a Dutch woman who after chatting away for about 20 minutes expressed surprise that I was English...she had thought that I was Belgian. Not sure if that was really a compliment, but there are plenty of French speaking Belgians who don't speak Dutch, or do so very badly, maybe she thought that I was one of them and only trying to speak her language to be polite.

what are the 8% 'others' speaking then?!

I voted 'other' to account for the small amount of Catalan I speak (although I'm working my way (incridibly slowly) towards an eventual goal of fluency).

I can say "show us your tits" in Norwegian...and "only kidding" dependant on the response to my first phrase.
