Just wondering like. I had to study French and German at school and Spanish at my first aborted attempt at university. I failed at all them and couldn't recall more that a couple of words in any of them, despite studying them for a combined total of nearly ten years.

Thought I was doomed to a life of only speaking English but it turns out since living over 'ere I've been able to learn Japanese pretty gosh darn well!

What languages can you speak well enough to say you can speak them, and WHY? Are you one of those multi-lingual freaks who have mastered five or more languages?

Just INTERESTED, like. :)

English, French and German.

I'm obviously fluent in English, my French and German are a little rusty purely due to lack of practice, but I've always had a knack for picking up foreign languages, so I suspect I would just need a little practice to get back to near-fluency.

I'm also working on learning Catalan since some of my ancestors were from Catalunya, but I've not got very far yet.

English, Irish and Arabic fluently.

I did Spanish and French in school and can get by when we go for a holiday or something.

I am learning Tibetan (khams) at the moment, far from fluent but getting there.

English fluently. French and Dutch "sort of" fluently.

Italian, German & Indonesian/Malay to faltering conversation level (reasonable vocabulary but shit grammar).

Tourist level Spanish, Portuguese, and Thai.

Plus basic survival in about 10 others (I know the word for 'beer' and can count to ten, which will sort you out in most emergency situations).

English fluently (obviously) and I used to be pretty fluent in German too - but that's got a bit rusty through under use.

Good enough French to have scored freeelance work as a translator and enough Welsh to get by in pubs and restaurants. Some basic Italian too, but not nearly enough to say that I speak it.

French A Level, German O Level, a bit of Spanish.

Thinking of learning Dutch, so I can pay homage to FDM in his native tongue

French A Level, German O Level, Latin O Level (does that count?).

And I learned my Italian by living there.

Speaking Italian makes it possible to get by as a listening and reading tourist in Catalan and (with a bit of effort) Spanish.

I'm just a little concerned (although from the posts of some people on this board i'm not actually surprised) that 24 people have voted, but only 22 can actually speak ENGLISH? ??? :lolol:

No, I think that's a fair reflection. There are quite a few people on here who seem unable to speak English...

Fluent in Enbglish (obviously)...communicatively fluent in Turkish thought not so good at reading. OK at Polish given some time to remember it as I haven't used it much in five years. Smattering of French, German, Romanian and Arabic.

English of course, plus Dutch and French, though a little rusty. I can also understand a reasonable amount of German despite never having made an effort to learn it, blame it on my knowledge of Dutch (German is fairly similar and a fair number of words are either close or the same) and living and working with Germans. Have a few words of Spanish picked up on my travels, the same for Welsh...intend to start learning Hindi as I am planning to spend some time in India at the end of the year.
