I don't have many possessions of my own, possibly an extreme opposing reaction to the fact Mrs Exile and Mini-Exile are almost hoarders and find it impossible to throw anything out but taking the "if there was a fire what would you rescue after family" approach...I've got a half finished painting on ochre canvas that's a detail of musicians from Trajan's column or similar, about A3 in size. None of the figures are finished, some are sketched in pencil, some outlined in white or red, it's probably not amazing artistically but I've always loved it since I was tiny.

My late father worked in mental health care in the 60s and was sent to a block of flats that anyone in social services (or whatever they were named at the time) was only advised to go into with police support, but he went in solo responding to reports of someone threatening to jump out of a window and kill themselves. My Dad talked him down, and the guy, an artist, gifted my Dad the painting. I don't know the full story but my Dad spent a bit of time in Rome in the 60s so in my mind that's linked somehow to why he was given that particular painting even though it's incomplete. When I moved out of home and rented my first flat, a small, basement place in Atlingworth Street, Kemptown, he gave it to me, and it's moved with me and been first on the walls of wherever I've lived ever since. That'd be the only thing I'd grab I think, though if Mrs Exile had already grabbed that from the inferno I'd go for my "photo box" which holds folders of black and white negatives and 35mm colour slides from my backpacking days and the hard drives with family weddings and Mini Exile's growing up photos on. Other family members have many equivalent family photos though so that's why those would be second...

A little bit of the painting:

I knew someone would be picky on that point. No, I don’t see them as possessions but I genuinely can’t think of any material thing I value more than them.

Genuinely? Come on, how about a bottle top opener or corkscrew? Maybe a pen?

Seriously, it goes without saying. None of us are going to put a watch or some such shit above our family. I think the question is about actual possessions, rather than people.

Has anyone ever told you how amazing you are :lolol:

For the thread, my grandads WW1 medals.
Ditto plus my Dad’s WW2 medals. All going to my son, who, as a firefighter, has 5 of his own.

A photo of my daughter that was taken about about 22 years ago. she's 27 now. We'll never get those days back. It captures a time of hope, laughter and innocence. Materialistically, I suppose it's my stunning Z3, which is more like an ornament that is kept in my garage, or some beautiful original circus and zoo posters from the 60's. The artwork is completely and utterly beyond belief. The walls of my flat are covered in them. In reality, some of them should be in the V&A.
Some of the artwork from that era is indeed amazing - so different from the rather sanitised 'digital' offerings.

My prized possession has got to be my dear mother who I love to bits. I just wish there weren’t quite so many bits falling off her down in the cellar. NB.

A watch from an ex girlfriend.

Some photographs.

My diaries.

A small ceramic owl that belonged to my Mum.

An engraved knife from a dear friend.

My Dad’s Navy chattels.

Various articles, props, kit, from my acting and stunt performer days. Pretty irreplaceable to me but I’m sure whoever clears up after me when I move on will look at it al, shrug and throw it in a bin bag.

A Wooden attaché trunk. Almost impossible to find in these particular dimensions anymore. The big bulky ones are common but these are rare as hen’s teeth. About a foot and a half in height and four foot long.

It’s great for storage and coffee table duties. But the thing I Iove about it the most is my most recent ex hated it. Hated it.

Wouldn’t have it in the flat, had to stay out in the hall. Now it’s spends its days in the warm lounge. Lovingly polished once a week and back in daily use. I love you, trunk.

Everything else I own is probably very replaceable. Well, all of it will one day be rubbish to someone but for now, I like it.

None of these possessions mentioned are worth a wank, last night about 1:30am I woke with stomach cramps, food poisoning? Too much beer over the weekend? an onion bahji lodged somewhere? I was in so much agony, the worst I’ve ever known and the prospect of an 8 hour wait for an ambulance didn’t make me feel better. I just laid there trying not to move. During that time however I literally thought an ulcer was gonna burst and I was gonna die,

I’d certainly have traded in everything I own at this point.

By 6a.m the pain had eased and I got some sleep. I woke about and I was still alive, I feel like shit now but the real pains gone.

Serious lifestyle changes start today. Look out for me at Chelsea I’ll be the one on the mineral water eating a salad.

Can I suggest you go and see a doctor before writing that pain off as “lifestyle changes required”.
Seriously.

I've got a few things on my walls that are probably most prized. I've got a decent collection of signed sporting memorabilia including verified signed pictures of Muhammad Ali, Martin Johnson, Gazza, Roberto Duran, Novak Djokovic and more. Probably my favourite thing on my wall is an original grafitti picture by The London Police, though recently I bought an original production cel from the Flintstones signed by Hanna & Barbara which I love too.

My memories.
I've lots of 'stuff', for instance all the newspapers from Wembley '83. 1000's of records, every one of them bringing back memories. Progs from Albion games in the 70's. All of this is worthless but I could never part with.
But as I sit at my desk I realise the closest thing to me is my collection of Albion Poppy badges in a box on my desk. I've two of all of them but buy 4 for all my kids and me.

Thanks for your concern, I’ll see how I get on today but I am prone to binge drinking and general overindulgence, not getting enough sleep and generally worrying myself sick over whether the boy will make the cut for the Ajax tickets. I shall be watching myself like a hawk. Thanks again.
