....I believe we were 4th in the old Division 1 in around November 1981 , for a week or so.

Any offers on this??

I remember going to a fans forum type event to relaunch the Supporters Club in early 1982 and I think we were 9th in the 1st division. And people were moaning that we were boring under Mike Bailey!! My recollection is that 7th was the highest we got, but Tim Carder's book can confirm.

I thought we reached 6th on the night we won 2-0 at The Dell. It was no fluke either, if saints had won they would have gone top of the league for the 1st time in their history.

"Didn't we get into a Uefa cup place for 24 hours after beating Southampton at the Dell on a Tuesday in late 1981?"

Thanks for the answer before the question Freddie, phone rang mid post.....

I recall that too. Although I was only a boy. Had a feeling that it may have put us fifth, but that could be memory putting more of a shine on it.

Well thank you all. I was working a night shift in those days but had a mate cover for me and dashed back to start work about midnight.

if I remember rightly it was Andy ritchie and Gatting (no, not Joe!) who scored the goals. The old enclosure at the Dell gave such a poor view that you could barely see the goal-line of the goal infront of you.

December 8th 1981. Beat Saints 2-0 away to go 6th.
Anyone else at that supporters club meet. Was I there with you El P?

None of the above count. Don't you know football started in 1992?

In our best season after 21 games in the top flight our record was

Played 21
Won 9
Drawn 8
Lost 4
Points 26 ( now 35 )
8th

We were infact I believe the most difficult team to beat in the top flight with the fewest defeats at that stage.

13th

Worringly, for someone who works with figures, your maths is out.

It would have been 52 points we'd have ended up with.

If your numeracy is that bad, it's no wonder there's a credit crunch.
