That we're rather better than we were 12 months ago. We got caught out by the sort of 'luck' that you get if you're a top 4 side (it's not really luck - it's just something they are liable to do) but we pretty well matched them. Quite encouraging - we won't be facing the likes of Chelsea every week.

Was excited when we were linked with him but went quiet very quickly. He looks like just what we need- a proper combative workhorse of a DM to sit in behind Alzate/Lallana and Bissouma to take and play those short passes out of defence and bring some aggression into the press in the middle of the pitch.

Sounds like Molumby

Doesn't work like that though does it. We just look the same as last season. We are rubbish upfront. We will go to Newcastle dominate possession waste 2 or 3 chances and will get a 1-1 or narrow loss.

We have won the least games of any premier League team this calendar year. Something needs to change fast.

The good

White will be fine as a premier league player.
Alzate and bissouma good combo first half both looking to get shots off.
Solly March had a bit of a blinder in many ways .
Lamptey quality
Lallana link up play will be very effective

The not so good

Injuries
Striking options - say no more.
Not sure where Bissouma disappeared to at half time.
AJ - no where near the level with simple paces yet again .

See what Newcastle brings .
I’d be very surprised if we have that much joy from both wing backs that often . That was very pleasing .
Opportunity was there to get something last night .

I guarantee Newcastle will park the bus against us as will Palace and Burnley.

Thought the better team lost, we didn't take our chances, individual mistakes cost us again. We'll learn and move forward we're building a brilliant young side. We definitely need more quality in numbers throughout the squad though. Looking a bit thin.

1. Loved the formation
2. Seriously need to stop gifting goals to teams - we seem to do it more than any other team in the league
!

Agreed and it seems particularly inevitable against the 'big' clubs. I said it before the games and was amazed we made it to 10 minutes at 0-0

Eacatly. On another day their second goal would have had the ball rattling around the back of the south stand and the deflection off Webster for the third would have gone wide. We would then be claiming we played so well and took it to a top six side. People are very blinkered by luck really. I doubt Alzate will give the ball away like that again for long time and if he does it won't be to front players as fast as Chelsea's.

On another day...sake, when will fans realise that it’s “today” that counts! Please stop using that cliche when it flies in the face of reality over an extended period of time. We need to stop gifting goals and start scoring them.

We still make basic mistakes which other teams seem to capitalise on mostly ending up with goals. In the after match analysis Ryan is the 2nd worst keeper for conceding long range shots behind Kepa. That needs to improve but lack of height will not help

1 - We need to stop giving cheap goals away. The 1st goal with us will always be crucial so last nights does grate somewhat (Leicester at home last season ring any bells?)
2 - Lamptey will be a standout in the Prem this year
3 - Solly actually had a decent game at LWB
4 - Biss needs to play further forward
5 - Maupay can't hold the ball up on his own. Would benefit from a centre forward alongside him to play off.

More positives than negatives - roll on the Newcastle game

I saw that stat, doesn't look good, I don't think anyone was stopping last nights shot though.

Overall anyone not happy with the performance and general play has a screw loose.

I thought Solly was great. Has eased my concerns in that position somewhat. If we get another wing back then great if not its not the end of the world.

We just need an additional front man. That's it really.

Pretty much outplayed them all night, I never saw Chelsea scoring all night long, cant remember being opened up at any stage.

Need to stop giving soft goals away like the first and go up in a game is all.

I learnt that Alzate wasn't ready for the role he played tonight. A boy in a man's shirt. Gave away the first, failed to close down James for the second. Propper might have done the same, but I would have preferred him to Alzate tonight.

Come on, that's harsh. Did you not see the number of times that with a sexy little body swerve he wriggled free and created space? We have no-one else who can drop a shoulder like that and get out of danger. Exactly what is needed in midfield. I thought he was great.

Harsh? It was utter rubbish!
