I've never actually been sure what the fuss was about whaling either, especially whales that aren't endangered.

I typed 'are whales endangered' into google and this is what i found out

Current status: The Southern right whale is one of three whales listed as endangered under Tasmania's Threatened Species Protection Act 1995. Southern right whales are also classified as nationally endangered under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Federal Act also lists Blue whales as endangered, while Humpback whales, Fin whales and Sei whales are listed as vulnerable.

Why are these whales endangered? These whales became endangered as a direct result of the commercial whaling industry. The first whale killed in Australian waters was a sperm whale in 1791 and in 1806 the first Australian whaling station was established at Ralphs Bay on the Derwent River near Hobart, Tasmania. By the 1900s Southern right whales were being driven to the edge of extinction. They were the first species of whale to be protected in 1935 because so few were left. Over 26,000 southern right whales had been killed in Australia and New Zealand alone.

Countries restrict fishing on species that are low in stock and this is rigorously enforced and offenders prosecuted.

No it isn't, thats just plain naive. The Japs pretty much do what they want unless they stray into Aussie waters, they buy off the poor pacific island states to turn a blind eye, they lie blatantly to the world about the reasons for killing whales BY SHOOTING AN EXPLODING HARPOON INTO THERE GUTS.

And while we are at it, try telling Cornish fishermen the Spanish are following the rulebook when they are clearly and openly not doing so, and try telling the Grimsby trawlerman the same thing in regard to the Russians.

Threads like this remind us that there really are people around who are happy to believe that everything is nicely looked after and orderly, because someone somewhere said everything was okay. I am not sure anyone was implying that NMH but rather that to most people the whaling carrried out by Japan is a little low on the radar compared to the real problems we have in the world, you know like, cancer, aids, war, drought, children dying from starvation, poverty inequality etc

For those who are okay with hunting whales, here is a picture I took a few weeks back of a blue whale that went past our boat (one of eight that we spotted that day). A truly magnificent mammal that really doesn't go looking for trouble from people. Leave them alone!

Human rights are SOOOOOOOOO much more important than animal rights. I'm not even sure animals deserve rights.

BTW this will never be as big a problem as the Western countries try to portray. Due to the logic of supply and demand. Basically whale meat tastes like shit and the Japanese don't eat it anymore. You know they stopped serving whale meat in schools f***ing AGES ago right??

Why is anybody the least bit surprised at the sheer hypocrisy of the Japanese ? They still deny all of the appalling atrocities they carried out In China and the rest of the Pacific before World War Two and during it.

Just letting you know how the AVERAGE Japanese person feels about eating whale meat. Whenever I ask them "have you ever tried whale meat??" The reply is usually "no" or "yes, but I didn't like it." You are portraying an image of Japan as a country of over a hundred million people regularly chowing down on pounds and pounds of whale meat every day which is absolutely NOT the case. Yes there are some rich morons who would pay to eat the stuff as a "delicacy" but exactly how many whales are killed to satisfy these morons?

Can anybody actually give me any numbers on how many whales were killed this year Let's start dealing with facts here rather than making sweeping statements like "everyone who lives in the South Pacific knows blah blah blah" because quite obviously they don't.

I've tasted lots of different less common animals meat but whale is probably top of my list now.

Don't think it would be as nice as a crocodile steak though, mainly becasue of the oil content.

Crocodile is the worst meat I've ever had. Very plain and tasteless.
