They serve whale for school dinners in Japan.

At times like this, I like to think that in a parallel universe they'll be serving up both whole & semi-atomized Nipponese for Whales, Sharks & Dolphins.

No offense, obviously.

I've never actually been sure what the fuss was about whaling either, especially whales that aren't endangered.

I typed 'are whales endangered' into google and this is what i found out

Current status: The Southern right whale is one of three whales listed as endangered under Tasmania's Threatened Species Protection Act 1995. Southern right whales are also classified as nationally endangered under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Federal Act also lists Blue whales as endangered, while Humpback whales, Fin whales and Sei whales are listed as vulnerable.

Why are these whales endangered? These whales became endangered as a direct result of the commercial whaling industry. The first whale killed in Australian waters was a sperm whale in 1791 and in 1806 the first Australian whaling station was established at Ralphs Bay on the Derwent River near Hobart, Tasmania. By the 1900s Southern right whales were being driven to the edge of extinction. They were the first species of whale to be protected in 1935 because so few were left. Over 26,000 southern right whales had been killed in Australia and New Zealand alone.

this is the website i found it on.

Countries restrict fishing on species that are low in stock and this is rigorously enforced and offenders prosecuted.

Why couldn't the same thing apply to whales?

No it isn't, thats just plain naive. The Japs pretty much do what they want unless they stray into Aussie waters, they buy off the poor pacific island states to turn a blind eye, they lie blatantly to the world about the reasons for killing whales BY SHOOTING AN EXPLODING HARPOON INTO THERE GUTS.

And while we are at it, try telling Cornish fishermen the Spanish are following the rulebook when they are clearly and openly not doing so, and try telling the Grimsby trawlerman the same thing in regard to the Russians.

Threads like this remind us that there really are people around who are happy to believe that everything is nicely looked after and orderly, because someone somewhere said everything was okay. They'll blithely go along with the concept that God is only ever on our side, and leaders all speak the truth and work purely for our benefit.

I am not sure anyone was implying that NMH but rather that to most people the whaling carrried out by Japan is a little low on the radar compared to the real problems we have in the world, you know like, cancer, aids, war, drought, children dying from starvation, poverty inequality etc

A few whales sorry not bothered unless it is the last thing left to sort and to be honest if a few Japs want to eat whales let them after all we eat pretty much everything else in the world so why not whales and dolphins

In fact thinking about it I'm with that Aussie fella I want to try it too now, mmmmmm blubbery!

For those who are okay with hunting whales, here is a picture I took a few weeks back of a blue whale that went past our boat (one of eight that we spotted that day). A truly magnificent mammal that really doesn't go looking for trouble from people. Leave them alone!

Siding with my adopted country on this one. Absolutely couldn't give a monkey's about whales. Or any animals for that matter.

Human rights are SOOOOOOOOO much more important than animal rights. I'm not even sure animals deserve rights.

BTW this will never be as big a problem as the Western countries try to portray. Due to the logic of supply and demand. Basically whale meat tastes like shit and the Japanese don't eat it anymore. You know they stopped serving whale meat in schools f***ing AGES ago right?????

Why is anybody the least bit surprised at the sheer hypocrisy of the Japanese ? They still deny all of the appalling atrocities they carried out In China and the rest of the Pacific before World War Two and during it.

They might make nice cars and stereos but frankly they are still scum. I will be very happy to see China, Korea and The Philippines kill their economy which they surely will in the next few years.

Thats a fuckin lie and you damn well now it, as does anyone like me who lives in the South Pacific. Your a victim of your own adopted countries propaganda bullshit. Whale meat is a highly priced delicacy is Nipponland, hence the massive barrage of lies the horrible nips put up when questioned about it, absolute denialist liar scum, straught out of the same denial theme that they still spin out about Nanking. Despicable bastards on this issue.

In the 12 years of reading this board your post goes down as one of the dumbest, and simply inaccurate ever. Well done.

Just letting you know how the AVERAGE Japanese person feels about eating whale meat. Whenever I ask them "have you ever tried whale meat??" The reply is usually "no" or "yes, but I didn't like it." You are portraying an image of Japan as a country of over a hundred million people regularly chowing down on pounds and pounds of whale meat every day which is absolutely NOT the case. Yes there are some rich morons who would pay to eat the stuff as a "delicacy" but exactly how many whales are killed to satisfy these morons????

Can anybody actually give me any numbers on how many whales were killed this year??? Let's start dealing with facts here rather than making sweeping statements like "everyone who lives in the South Pacific knows blah blah blah" because quite obviously they don't.

And while I agree that the Nanking denial situation is despicable I object to you using the phrase "horrible nips", which I regard as a clear racist statement.

And you know the troubles on this board recently regarding the incitement of racial hatred being a criminal offense.

I'd love to taste whale meat.

I've tasted lots of different less common animals meat but whale is probably top of my list now.

Don't think it would be as nice as a crocodile steak though, mainly becasue of the oil content.

Crocodile is the worst meat I've ever had. Very plain and tasteless.

Amount of Minke whales population in 2008:

Scientific Committee meeting, the figure of 665,074 was presented and discussed at the meeting and, subject to further analysis, may be the accepted 2008 population figure.

Source Minke whale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amount of Minke whale captured before April 2009:

On its five-month mission, the six-ship flotilla caught 680 whales including 679 minke and just one fin whale - well below a planned total haul of between 765 and 935 of the giant mammals, the agency said.[/I]

Source Japan's Antarctic whale catch falls short of target - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

680 from 665,074??????

I won't be losing any sleep over it.

... Seriously, the legal system was not in place at the time to protect us from those two fools, but the FA got the kick up the backside it needed and put the laws in place which meant that it should not happen again.
Ooh Hants I'm surprised at you, you're not one who usually falls for whitewashed bullshit. The fact is despite all the fine words from the FA there are no real safeguards in place to prevent other clubs from 'doing a Brighton'. In fact Notts County are in a similar position. When the current owners, Munto Finance, took over they insisted that the Supporters Trust gave them, for nothing, all the shares it held. They're now looking to sell County for about six times what they paid for it - and as they legally own the club they intend to keep all the money and not give any of it back to the Supporters Trust. Sounds familiar?

'We' (the people) have always got to keep an eye on 'them'.
