West Country Holiday

I had the pleasure of teaching down there for a term. Although a cold and wet time of year it was just the most amazing place.

I lived in Plymouth for four years and loved it. Went back over the summer and stayed just round the coast.

Family holiday wise it is great - the national marine aquarium is superb and I always liked the Barbican. Also, for a family day out, Pennywell farm was superb with my 2 year old.

However, as a place to stay, extend your area to over the 'border' (the Tamar) and go somewhere like Looe. Or North Devon where the beaches are even better. Just avoid Padstein (Padstow).

Have to disagree with you about Padstow,it is my favourite town in Cornwall and is far more than just Padstein. It is a beautiful area with plenty for everyone.
We do avoid visiting in the height of the season though, as like many other places it gets packed.
My wife and I are staying in Brixham for a few days in mid September and then off to Padstow in the second half of October!
Many good suggestions have been made for the O.P. and I hope he has a good holiday. At least he is unlikely to bump into the rather blinkered 'Complete Badger'!

I liven in Kingsteignton, Devon for 3 years and there's shedloads of stuff to do.
Just got back from a weeks holiday staying with relatives in Paignton and seeing friends and family.

A word of caution though, in the summer holidays, Torbay is RAMMED, and mostly with Brummies and Northerners who think that a pub on the seafront is classy and cheesy chips are gourmet food. Travelling can be mental, it took us nearly two hours to get from Paignton to Newton St Cyres to see my auntie, a 50 minute journey (worth it though, for the food and beer at the Beer Engine pub).

Personally I'd go for North Devon around Lynmouth but be prepared to get stuck in traffic jams.

If you ignore what is actually on offer (which is usually not a lot), I think my biggest issue with holidays in this country is that the culture is exactly the same. You're not broadening your horizons by going to Cornwall, Wales or the Lake District. You're just slightly changing the scenery for a week. The people, way of life and attitude will still be exactly the same as it is in Sussex, hence there is little point in doing it.

Sorry but this is complete bollocks. The culture in Devon is very different to Sussex, Cornwall more so.

The obvious plus for a holiday abroad is the weather and if that could be guaranteed in this country I think many more would holiday here. It always amuses me that people go abroad and spend their time looking for an English breakfast or Sunday roast instead of eating the local dishes.

little point in taking a holiday in this country just because of that? ..whilst i agree with your sentiments about immersing yourself in another culture (presumably u dont go to benidorm) ..a holiday doesn't just have to be about that ...you can broaden your historical knowledge by holidays in this country and many other things..if you aren't blinkered to the many opportunities....the way of life down in the west country seems different to me unless you spend all your time in shopping centres

Family stuff. Some exploring and cultural stuff for me and the wife and some fun stuff for the kids to do.

Probably looking for some where a bit quaint to stay, not a large town like Torquay nor Peacehaven alike either.

Just in Cornwall and within sight of Plymouth - look up Kingsand, Cawsand, Whitsand Bay and the Rame Peninsular. Lovely part of the world.

Here is a pic taken a good few years ago of Kingsand on a spring day. You can walk to Plymouth (ok ferry and bus involved at the end) throught Mount Edgecumbe park in the background and then get the 93 bus back, top deck front if you are lucky for the finest bus ride in England (sorry to any fans of the 13X).
