........anywhere between Weymouth and Plymouth, preferably on the coast.

Thinking of going that way for a week next summer. Can anyone recommend somewhere nice or places to avoid.

Cheers.

Lyme Regis? Nice small seaside town, not too far from Exeter and Weymouth for days out.

Depends what u'r after, family stuff or a big old pissup?

Family stuff. Some exploring and cultural stuff for me and the wife and some fun stuff for the kids to do.

Probably looking for some where a bit quaint to stay, not a large town like Torquay nor Peacehaven alike either.

Not sure what type of accommodation you're after but do NOT go to Devon Cliffs holiday park near Exmouth.

Unless you want to spend your hard earned vacation in a caravan which will be approx 18 inches from 4 other caravans and your evenings with the biggest collection of bingo wings and travellers anywhere in Europe.

Nice beach though......

Just got back from a week in St Ives, Cornwall, with Mrs and our combined family of 5. Head for St Ives if you can. Loads to do. Choice of 5 beaches at low tide. Safe swimming. Crabbing, Walking, Bit of surf. Shoping - & Art Galleries (not my thing).

Not cheapest, but worth the journey.

For Devon, Dorset, love Sidmouth & Beer (if you want somewhere a bit quaint).

It does not get any better than Salcombe . And just outside is Hope Cove which has hotels and houses to rent. You are also in the centre of The South Hams so you.can visit Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands, surfing at Bigbury, Noss Mayo. Loads of other hidden beaches, beautiful countryside, plenty for the kids to do, great food. Look all this up on internet, but I cannot recommend this area strongly enough.

As a kid, my family took us to holiday camps in Devon, i had friends who went to Dorset too.

Willacomb (bad spelling) has one of the best beaches in the uk.
Popped over there last year, Cracking body boarding & surfing.

St. Ives is such a special place, love the town and the Tate, a town everyone should visit at least once

This .... and if you do decide to venture outside of the aforementioned holiday park - you'll find that there's jack shit to do or see here!

Dawlish is a nice little seaside town, but again, not much to do if you've got kids. South Devon is nice, coastal villages around the Kingsbridge area are nice, and the coast is a lot more rugged and scenic if you are not the "long sandy beach full of ice cream licking holidaymakers" type. Hope Cove is a good place to visit.

I had the pleasure of teaching down there for a term. Although a cold and wet time of year it was just the most amazing place.

I lived in Plymouth for four years and loved it. Went back over the summer and stayed just round the coast.

Family holiday wise it is great - the national marine aquarium is superb and I always liked the Barbican. Also, for a family day out, Pennywell farm was superb with my 2 year old.

However, as a place to stay, extend your area to over the 'border' (the Tamar) and go somewhere like Looe. Or North Devon where the beaches are even better. Just avoid Padstein (Padstow).

Dawlish or Teignmouth...... both are close enough to all the great family locations, but are also near enough to more cultural spots like Totnes, Dartmouth etc.
