was in yesterdays observer too. Think they mentioned they are trying to have it ready for the charity shield game.

Also mentioned that the F.A may get sued for the construction company(might be somone else . . multiplex ??) to recover costs

No great shocker is it. Typical of this country though, late and way over budget seems to be the norm for some reason.

Multiplex is an Australian company, isn't it? ???

Oh, and the contractor should be responsible for any exceeding of the budget, just as Laings were on the Millenium stadium. It's funny that loads of people use the Millenium stadiumn as an example of a great stadium built at a reasonable cost. If only they knew.....

Sure is. Me thinks they won't be a company much longer though as they will be in big money trouble as the project was done on a fixed price.

Chosen by an ENGLISH FA, who really do know how to spend money well!

As I said, the extra cost is Multiplex's problem, not the FAs.

If the stadium is as good as it was planned to be, then they will have spent the money well IMHO.

Losing the cash from as many as 21 different events will damage the FA's finances, which are linked to the stadium's success. The concerts were seen as easy revenue-generators for an organisation that has committed £150m to Wembley and has bank loans to honour.

The FA's problems may not end there. Multiplex, which is locked in legal action with several sub-contractors, may sue the FA in a bid to force it to share some of the pain. 'They will seek to mitigate their losses. So spending £500,000 on legal action could be worthwhile,' said one source.

Looks like the English FA will have to rely on the WELSH again then.....

Obviously not seen the contract, but their should be a pretty hefty penaly on Multiplex for being late, too - to mitigate the losses incurred by the FA.

It could all end in court if Multiplex are trying to offload some of the responsibility. I wonder what grounds they will cite, as I doubt the FA has changed it's requirements much. "We'll have 1 national stadium, please" should be all that was needed!!

The FA Cup final is to be held in Cardiff after the Football Association finally lost faith in Multiplex’s ability to deliver the stadium in time.

Multiplex is said to be “disappointed” at the decision but in its announcement to the Australian Stock exchange yesterday said it would work to complete the £757 stadium as quickly as possible.

The decision ends months of uncertainty surrounding the project which has cost Australian contractor Multiplex at least £100 million and is being penalised £1 million a week for overrunning the deadline.

Multiplex company secretary Mark Wilson said: “We understand that the FA has made this decision on the basis that it requires 100% certainty that the venue will be fully functional by 13 May 2006, the scheduled date for the the 2006 FA Cup final.''

The original £325million cost has more than doubled on the stadium which has been beset with problems since before construction began.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
I can't believe Multiplex get fined £120,000 everyday that it is late, from 31st January.

Very odd considering they did an incredible job on Stadium Australia and finished it a year early!!!

Perhaps we are lazy as well as boring!! (See Lazy B*stards thread)

Where did you get that from?

From the news story I "borrowed" above it's £1M a week. That's £142,857.14 (approximately) a day.

Or are there 8 1/3 days a week in your world? ???

Dammit, I've always said this will end in hugely expensive tears for every single football fan in this country. And, impressive though the new stadium will undoubtedly be, a) Cardiff town centre is a perfect setting for big sporting events, b) the old Wembley was well worth preserving for its historical and architectural importance, even thought its best days as a football ground were long past (maybe as a concert venue). But even that's gone now. And c) you can bet your arse that seats, drinks, food etc. are going to be even more lethally expensive at the new ground once they've finished it if there's a massive debt to pay off.

Can't wait to see that fat git Wayne Rooney waddling out at the "McDonalds New Wembley", if they ever finish it. Very dignified.
