Caroline Lucas | Caroline named 'MP of the Year' in Public Life awards

Caroline named 'MP of the Year' in Public Life awards
13 September 2011

Caroline Lucas has been named ‘MP of the Year' in the Scottish Widows & Dods Women in Public Life Awards- just 16 months after she was elected as the first Green to enter the UK Parliament.

The title was awarded to the Brighton Pavilion MP, who is also leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, for proving to be ‘the most effective woman in the House of Commons who has shown outstanding achievement during the parliamentary year'.

Since being elected in the 2010 general election, the MP has also been named ‘Best All Rounder' in the Total Politics End of Year MP awards - and ‘Newcomer of the Year' by the Spectator in its 2010 Parliamentarian of the Year awards.

On receiving the accolade from Scottish Widows and Dods, Caroline said:

"I am delighted that my work as a Member of Parliament has been recognised in this way. It is an incredible honour to serve the people of Brighton Pavilion and I will continue to strive to be the strong and principled voice which our city deserves.

"Until we see far more women represented at senior levels in politics and industry, playing a far greater role in decision making at the top, I think awards like these are an important way of highlighting and celebrating female achievement."

In Parliament, Caroline is a Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Fuel Poverty, and Vice Chair of the Public and Commercial Services, Sustainable Housing, Animal Welfare, and CND All Party Parliamentary Groups.

She is also a member of the Parliament's Environmental Audit Committee, and sits on the Energy Bill Committee.

Caroline continues to be an active campaigner on a range of issues and is Vice President of Stop the War Coalition and the RSPCA, a CND National Council Member, a Director of the International Forum on Globalization, a Matron of the Women's Environmental Network, and a Patron of Martlet's hospice in East Sussex.

Lucas will be in trouble at the next election anyway primarily because Labour won't be as unpopular as they were at this election.

I'll say she'll increase her majority. The boundary changes help her and the fact that she's been a very active MP will help her.

Plus the fact that HB&B will canvass for the Tories again - that must be worth a couple of thousand votes :)

Where's HB&B!

Here I am.

The fact she won this so called accoalade from The Scottish Widows ( I bet she didn't accept saying Scottish Widows as that would have been saliva carnage) says it all. It, like Lucas had absolutley nothing to do with Brighton what so ever.

In 2010 I sent Lucas a Brightonian quiz eventually after some time she completed it, or someone did. I contacted her recently and asked if she'd do another one. Only this time I actually like her to do it. Apparently she will. Her ratio of parlimnetary questions that relate to Brighton is very low, very low indeed. Her victory in Brighton ws due to fact many of the student population misguidedly voted for her because they thought it was trendy and our ' Lord Sutch' candiate didn't appeal to them.

Lucas rocked up in Brighton for her own self serving purposes, not for the good of Pavilion and it's communities.

The people of Pavilion wanted a Green MP. That reflects a wider outlook on life and politics than focusing on local constituency issues. Who really votes at a General for local constituency issues anyway?

Do you live in Pavilion Ward?

How do you explain Chris Hawtree's Green council success in Hove then? There's not a huge student vote here.

For the record I think the Greens will go from strength to strength down here.

As an aside, when Chris Hawtree knocked on my door and I politely explained I am a member of the Labour Party he still stood and chatted to me about local issues for a good 20 minutes. The Tory chap walked off when I told him which party I supported and asked him for some good reasons as to why I should vote for them. Labour never turned up.

Low turn out. Loads of students live in Hove as well. Students and the woefully misguided who think voting Green will get them a gratis gluten free flapjack at the Mills Emporium.

So what youre saying is the Tories lost because the voters did not vote for them? And they're are not loads of students in Hove.
