In fairness, Patel may not do much thinking at all. Its pretty obvious though. Ferries are not state owned so would want paying, french authorities would not process, so would 'send them back' on the next ferry. And repeat.

I think he imagines some kind of D-Day scenario where we storm the French beaches with landing craft and deposit all the foreigners back there.

I would ask what should we do instead? Make them walk the plank near Calais? But I fear I know what his answer would be.
