I really can't see why the French have any real interest in helping, tbh.
'We' chose to go it alone, therefore if it's a problem (which it seems to be for some), then it's down to the government to solve it...or not.
If they can't, well, so be it.

I've said it all along, be nice to French. If we act like pricks they can make things pretty difficult.

But the Vote Leave government is too busy stoking culture wars, the racist/zenophobic base may love it but it won't help the situation

i wonder if you have thoughts of your own or just paid to promote others?

as for the tweet, people travel thousands of miles, across mountains, desert, the mediteranian, but the only reason people smuglers exist is because of the last 50 miles. does that argument really make sense to anyone? cant we at least acknowledge that yes the people smugglers a large part of the problem?

You would have thought even at the simplest humanitarian level there would be an interest for the French and the EU to throw enormous amounts of resources into stamping out these vile criminal gangs, considering its within their jurisdiction and considering the obvious consequences of the gangs continuing.
The French at least seem to be genuinely shocked at what has unsurprisingly happened on their watch and are promising tonight all sorts of clampdowns now.
This inevitable tragedy might finally spur them into getting really tough now instead of letting more drown.

Well, let's hope they bail us out, as it seems we're incapable of doing it ourselves..

I dont believe its within our right to swamp French territory with additional resources to stamp out the criminal activity of the smuggling gangs.
If they are shocked enough at the deaths they will act on what they appear to be promising and now throw everything at stopping this activity.

Absolutely, and it helps that we control our own borders, now, so fingers crossed, eh?

I wont hold my breath at France finally throwing the kitchen sink at the criminal gangs in France and putting an end to their vile dinghy trade but there appears to be a mood change over there now a large number are dead......... we can only hope this tragic event will finally spur them into serious action.
Hopefully they have a plan and mass arrests are coming.

Not sure that it's *their* "vile dinghy trade", but should they fail, I have utmost confidence in our own government to take control of the situation, which must be a great weight off your (and others) mind.

Umm, their vile dinghy trade refers to the vile dinghy trade of the criminal gangs in France.

As for the French authorities, now a large number are sadly dead they will want to be seen as coming down hard on the criminals operating in their jurisdiction. I expect they will have a very public show of force at some point. Lets hope the French dont fail to stamp out this smuggling dinghy activity and more end up drowning.
Ending this criminality is firmly in their court

Ah, I assumed you were blaming the French for the 'vile dinghy trade' - apologies. :)

Yes, perhaps they will do something, but failing that, we have control of our borders now, so I'll sleep soundly knowing that we can look after our own shores.
Thank God for that.

The French have to do something now, no perhaps about it and there shouldnt be a "failing that" attitude from them. France cant let this criminal activity continue anymore when the criminal activity within their jurisdiction is primarily a matter for French law enforcement. The EU and Frontex can assist with resources as its at the Schengen external border but France must get tough now with these criminals.

I hope they feel as strongly about it as you do. :)

Nighty night - sleep well.

No one, either British nor French (or any other nationality) should forget that this is a human tragedy generated by desperation and facilitated by criminality.

It is time to stop demonising/constantly criticising/laying responsibility on other nationalities and start dealing constructively and collectively as humans to find solutions. Nationalism should have no place in this debate.......
