Wearing the Poppy.

Does the money collected still go to the Haig fund nowadays or have they stopped allying themselves with a man who took 2 and a half million young British soldiers to their pointless deaths.

No he didn't. And any major tactical decision he made had to go through the Ministry of War or even as high as Government first, as well as have the explicit sanction of the French or Belgians. Blackadder has a lot to answer for

I thought I might attract some comments to my post.. In answer to 2 points:

Does the Remembrance Service glorify wars? That is perhaps a subjective question, but to my mind it does.
The Poppy Appeal is not just about WW2, it honours the Servicemen of all wars and conflicts since WW1. Many of these have been contraversial to say the least.

That is all I want to say on the matter , each to their own opinion

The Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Services are nothing to do with whether conflicts are 'controversial' - it is purely to remember those who gave their service, in some cases their physical or mental health and in extremis even their lives.

In MY opinion you wish to play politics as to the 'good' and 'bad' conflicts which clearly most other posters on this thread do not.

As you say each to their own - you can enjoy a lie-in on Sunday and miss the Remembrance Services which offend you so much and I will go to one to show some respect to my family and friends who were Servicemen.

Whatever your views of Remembrance, the point of the Poppy Appeal and the Poppy is to remember the sacrifices made by the sevices in all wars , it is remebering their sacrifices and to raise funds for the well being of ex-servicemen and women, who need support as Governments of whatever persuasion do not provide the right amount of money to support injured ex servicemen and the families of servicemen killed in duty. Your problem with unjust wars is a problem with the executive who decide to go to war, not the servicemen and women who in doing their duty pay the ultimate price.

Talking of Governments not supporting our troops.

Have you read Lloyd George's accounts in his memoirs of Haig ? He succumbed to the French pressure before Ypres 3...yes.. So I'll stick with my original opinion of the man.

Next you'll be telling me that they never made their coffee out of mud.

At the risk of taking some stick here are my reasons for not wearing a poppy this year (its not even to do with being a Pacifist, I still respect the dead who fought to let me be one). I won't be wearing a poppy because over the years it seems that everyone on tv and in prominent positions seem to wear them, it apears now not to be a matter of choice and remembrance but a conditional prerequisite. I feel these acts and some comments on this board actually devalue the symbolism of the poppy.

I will still donate my money, I will still remember the dead, I will still observe the silence (which many wont), but I'll probably still get chastised for not wearing a poppy..

Abort, retry, fail
I had a recycled poppy from years ago, which finally fell to pieces this time last year, so opted for a pin badge. I'll have to make do with jibes of being a tight arse, as it has '2012' on it.

Have you honestly been chastised for not wearing a poppy?

You should have got the one without the year on!

I thought this year they started putting the year on the badge.

That is, effectively, a really poor work ethic and you basically don't want a poppy. If you did, you'd have one by now.

I disagree, likewise I have not seen any sellers either, but then I don't smoke/ read newspapers so don't visit newsagents nor do I do shopping ( wife's does it). I will wear a poppy with pride, but so far have not encountered any sellers this year.

I wasn't being serious. I have honestly only found one Poppy seller on my travels, luckily it is at my workplace.

I am a notorious Poppy fiend, I lose them all the time but like to have one on. It means something to me because my only real memories of my Grandad are related to Remembrance Sunday and his war stories, which he told with pride, humour and humility. I go through a load of Poppies every year, and I'm proud to do so.

If others don't want to wear a Poppy, that's fine. But it matters to me personally.

Sainsburys have them, and I saw a chap in the motorway services last weekend selling them.
