At the end of my tether
I would never tell anybody else what to do, personal freedom is way too important to do that, but since we are discussing Remembrance Day I will add that I have never and will never wear a red poppy.

My abhorrence of war is such that I personally find the glory attached to this day unacceptable. If anything, a white poppy would more accurately suit me . To quote the Peace Pledge Union site " The white poppy was not intended as an insult to those who died in the First World War - ..................- but a challenge to the continuing drive to war"

Spiffing. Bar the continuing drive to war bit, sounds like that part was written in 38 but you wear your white poppy.

Oh just before I go can you tell me where the glory is in remembering the death and sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of service personnel in every conflict for a hundred years? I must have missed the champagne lunch last year.

Could you point out to me where either WWI or WWII are glorified ? Wearing a poppy doesn't glorify war it remembers those who died ..... on both sides. Your choice whether you wear one or not but please don't make them out to be a glorification of war when they're not.

Remembrance Sunday isn't day for glorifying wars FFS. It is a day to remember men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice, their lives. So you wear your white poppy of you want but I'll continue to wear my red one and I'll do so with thanks to those people.

You do as you want. After all its a free country, I wonder how that happened? Perhaps it was the average joes who when needed took up arms to save the country and the freedom we enjoy.

Anyone who goes to the trouble of buying and attaching a poppy, and doesn't set their leaf to eleven o'clock should be shot.

Indeed. They clearly HATE Britain, especially if they were in the Navy.

I know what you mean, but if they fought to enable people like PA to say what they think, then why are we slagging them off for saying what they think??

I also think that we ought to be a bit more nuanced about this whole thing. No-one (well not many) would disagree that fighting and dying in the second world war helped to preserve these kinds of freedoms from Nazism; my maternal grandfather, a sailor, had his ship sunk in the Arctic, and spent 3 years as a pow, a real sacrifice for freedom.
The first World War, however, (which was where the poppy thing came from) was a whole different kettle of fish -- futile, senseless and unnecessary. My great uncle volunteered, under age, and was killed two days before the Armistice and was adamant that the whole thing was a waste. His brother, my paternal grandfather also fought and survived, shell-shocked and broken (we'd call it post-traumatic stress syndrome these days), and spent forty miserable years before taking his own life. I don't think these men fought for anything worthwhile; rather they were lions led by donkeys, and it should never have happened like that. I'll wear the poppy, but I won't be thinking of them fighting for our freedom, I'll be grieving for young men whose lives were wasted by idiot politicians and generals.

Does the money collected still go to the Haig fund nowadays or have they stopped allying themselves with a man who took 2 and a half million young British soldiers to their pointless deaths.

The Moral Maze at 8 tonight is all about Poppies, should be worth a listen. I'm all for remembering the dead and injured but I also agree with the pacifism ethos of the white poppy wearers. Half and half poppies anybody? Or one of each!?

I wear a poppy and fully support the excellent work of the Royal British Legion, but i find this aggressive poppy fascism disturbing especially now it seems to have expanded to how you arrange a paper leaf on the damned things. If you wear a poppy brilliant, if you wear a white poppy fine, if you don't wear a poppy ok, it's your choice. If you want to explain your decision and persuade people of your opinion great, but please don't try to force everyone to conform to your narrow interpretation. It's disrespectful to the principles the people who served and are serving on our behalf were defending.

Good post Scampi, very well said.

I thought I might attract some comments to my post.. In answer to 2 points:

Does the Remembrance Service glorify wars? That is perhaps a subjective question, but to my mind it does.
The Poppy Appeal is not just about WW2, it honours the Servicemen of all wars and conflicts since WW1. Many of these have been contraversial to say the least.

That is all I want to say on the matter , each to their own opinion

Whatever your views of Remembrance, the point of the Poppy Appeal and the Poppy is to remember the sacrifices made by the sevices in all wars , it is remebering their sacrifices and to raise funds for the well being of ex-servicemen and women, who need support as Governments of whatever persuasion do not provide the right amount of money to support injured ex servicemen and the families of servicemen killed in duty. Your problem with unjust wars is a problem with the executive who decide to go to war, not the servicemen and women who in doing their duty pay the ultimate price.

This and the fact we have the choice to wear the poppy, something that might not have been had servicemen/women not given.
