Albion manager Mark McGhee and his backroom staff have launched another hectic round of scouting missions after missing out on one striker and cooling their interest in another.
The transfer window closes in a fortnight and McGhee is still desperate to add firepower to his relegation-threatened squad, despite Saturday's 2-1 home win over Leeds.
The Seagulls have lost out to Derby in their bid to sign former Polish international front man Marcin Zewlakow.
The 29-year-old from Metz, the French club Albion signed winger Alex Frutos from, played in a practice match for Derby yesterday against Port Vale.
McGhee, who misses tonight's FA Youth Cup clash against Chelsea at Withdean because of the striker search, said: "That's the problem we have got. When somebody like him is faced with a choice between Derby and ourselves he'll choose Derby."
The British Isles forward interesting Albion failed to impress coach Dean White when he watched him in action at the weekend, while the Seagulls have been priced out of a move for another potential target from the lower divisions.
The chances of former loan keeper Wayne Henderson rejoining Albion permanently from Aston Villa are also decreasing by the day.
The offer made to Henderson is final and McGhee is less concerned about the goalkeeping situation now after Michel Kuipers' return to top form in the Reserves and against Leeds and Flo Chaigneau's recent appearances against Southampton and Coventry.
"We've done all we can," McGhee said. "We're not doing anything else. I haven't heard from his agent now for I don't know how many days."
Meanwhile, Albion goalkeeping prospect Richard Martin is due to train with Everton this week. The Argus first revealed Everton's interest in the 18-year-old last month.
